    Possibly the worst email ever.
I get literally tons of crap junk email every day and have to search through it for stuff. IT Support don't give a **** either.
There are no filters to stop this crap.
I know I can forward it onto another address and use the junk filter there but should I have to?
    It really is becoming intolerable.

    Sorry for the rant.

Mine is grand. The only junk I get is off that Martin Butler guy who is the Vice-President for students. It could be worse. My brother showed me his Trinity email account once, there was over 400 emails on it after one year. I think last year I got something like 120 emails and most were actually relevant. You should just delete rubbish emails straight away, thats what I do.

It looks like you'll have to forward your email to another address. Either that or wait until the college introduces Puremessage for undergraduates sometime next year.

I also hate the damn Spam that comes through from Brady and the propaganda police, really ticks me off, I usually have a quick skim over the first line , then DELETE, Iv had three years of that propaganda bull**** .....FREE TIBET

I've been using Connect email for nearly 3 years and (aside from the Vice Presidents updates and such) I've received exactly 1 spam email. The trick is to only use your Connect email account for college-related stuff. Don't enter it on any forms, don't sign up to websites using it, for God's sake don't write it down for all to see on a webpage, etc. Get a free Gmail account or something for that.

Obviously it's too late for you to do that though, so you have three options:

    1) Put up with it
    2) Put up with it for now, then use the college's spam filter when they introduce it next year
    3) Download and install Mozilla Thunderbird, which comes with a junk mail folder. Set up your Connect account there. Turn on junk email filtering. Throw every piece of spam you get into the junk folder, and after a few days it'll start doing this automatically (it needs to learn what you recognise as junk and what you don't.)

This also works with Apple's Mail program if you have a Mac.

those college emails are spam if you havent noticed
This definition proves my point 'the use of mailing lists to blanket Usenet groups or private e-mail boxes with indiscrimination, unsolicited messages of a promotional nature. ...'

Here's your damn reference its not in Harvard style so dont cry about it.

Thats the thing. I have never used or given my email address to any sites.
    I literally get 50+ emails a day.
I think its time to abandon it altogether.

just as an aside I wonder how many people will block Brady and the gangs' emails next year?

The SU Comms & IT officer this year is working on this one AFAIK, been trying to persuade the college to install spam filters.

I think they are planning to install Pure Message. It's already on the staff system and it's easy to sign up to using UCD Connect.

I know nothing else about it really, since I run Spam Assassin on my own server to scan messages from all the accounts I have. I have noticed most of the spam e-mail seems to come to my UCD Connect student account, I get none to my staff one.

Hmm, strange. Try the Thunderbird thing though. I wouldn't abandon Connect, it's the only channel UCD use to send you any important messages.

Was that to me? If so, I suggest you tone it down; I didn't attack you, in fact I barely made any reference your post.

In any case, I should point out that UCD Connect is not a Usenet group or a private email box, it is a service provided by UCD for its students in order to facilitate communication within the college. Therefore, UCD using their own facility for its intended purpose is hardly spam. If you don't like the messages from Brady and Butler try the method I outlined above, it can block them too if you set it up to.

Thunderbird is much better than the webmail client. Most of the stuff on Connect is marketing spam anyway from the politburo cough cough admin.

Just wondering, is there any way to retain your old email when you leave UCD or do you immediately lose access?

This was never aimed at you or anyone in particular :). Although it was aimed at anyone who intended on defending UCD policy by taking a defensive stance on MY previous posts in this thread. And thank you for the advice i will be sure to give it a try :)

I wish the SU would stop sending complete crap through it.

Fair enough, just that it came right after my post. If you've any problems post back here, I'm too tired to write another massive guide today after my post in the food thread earlier :p

Brady sends emails? I only get Butlers and the SU ones that would be considered spam, and I actually like Butlers, he is a nice guy.

You're not alone. I get a rediculous amount asking do I want to buy viagra or a fake rolex. But I can't just abandon it. My lecturers send quite a few emails to us

i wonder if your 'friends' have been up to something?????

If you get it forwarded to a gmail account, gmail has pretty good spam filters, and then all you have to worry about is keeping an eye on the mail quota, which seems decently large. Then you won't miss lecturer emails, but won't have to deal with all the PRIME STAATSLOTERIJ PROMOTIONS or whatever.
