This is wrecking my head now but my catalytic convertor light wont go off !

I've had the car serviced and hooked up to a computer and the engine management system isnt recognising a fault, the car has also been NCT'd and the emissions are perfect, miles to spare in fact! The light comes on some days and some days not at all. Ive accepted it means fook all at this stage as everything seems fine but its just SO annoying ! I've disconnected the battery and reconnected it as Ive read on some sites that would reset the fault....yes it does...then a few days later it comes back

I've thought about removing the fuse to get the light off the dash but it appears the fuse covers more than just this light...grrr !

Its a passat TDI by the way.

    Cheers

Could be an o2 sensor thats on the way out!! Bring ti to the mechanic when its on solid so when they hook it up they can find the fault.

Cheers, but did the diagnostics at the last service (when the light was on proper in the days preceeding) and nothing is showing! Headwreck.
Mechanic said its a known fault with them but as I say its just annoying me at this stage.

if its a known fault then he should have fixed it :)

You need to get someone else to look at it

Whats the difference between your version of diagnostics and diagnostics of a fault in a garage

Its a known fault in so far as, its one of those nuances that just cant be fixed, a riddle with no answer ;)

Some people claim to be able to diagnose issues. Others actually can diagnose issues!
You can get cheap kits that claim to show all errors etc. but when push comes to shove, they don't do much!

Bull! If there wasn't a fault then the light wouldn't have come on. It may not be anything to do with the cat or whatever but it was caused by something!

    Exactly as kbannon said above.

Diagnostics, to some (most) people is a computer that plugs into the car, as in, put the diagnostice on it.

In reality, diagnostics is a complex series of procedures, one of which entails the use of a computer for serial communication with the cars on board systems. There are various other pieces of equipment that are required for diagnostics along with both knowledge of the system being diagnosed and info/data/wiring diags etc.

That doesn't mean that a VW main dealer will be able to fix either. I wouldn't waste my money with them. I would source out a proper diagnostics specialist who knows what they are doing.
I had a similar experience with a Peugeot (engine management light comming on and car going into limp home mode), and I was warned not to go to the Peugeot Dealer because they will not be able to fix and that they would only send it to x person. Lucky for me, the mechanic that was telling me this had x person's contact details. (He is a diesel pump specialist with all the fault code software for most cars).
This person might not be able to help you in partucilar in this instance (he is in Cork) but there should be someone in your area with the skills.
