I'm having trouble assigning a static IP address to my machine with Eircom broadband. The modem/router is a Netopia 2247NWG. When I give the machine a static IP address I cannot access the internet.

The IP address of the router is 192.168.1.254 so I gave the machine an IP address of 192.168.1.10.

    Any ideas?

What subnet mask and default gateway did you specify?

    Can you ping the router?

..and you also need to manually enter the DNS values or no internet.

Your router normally assigns IPS in the range 192.168.2.100 to 192.168.2.254 or
192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.254 depends on the router

Assign your computer an address outside this range, such as 192.168.2.11 or 192.168.1.11 .It must still be in the same "class C subnet." In other words, it must still begin with 192.168.2. or 192.168.1. if that is what your router's IP address begins with. Also, you may not use an address ending in .255, which is reserved for special "broadcast" messages.

    Try 192.168.1.0

In a /24 range, .0 is a network address. You're not going to get anywhere by assigning that address to a host (in fact, the OS probably won't even let you do it)

192.168.1.0 will not work as an IP address. E.g. a network like 192.168.1.x/24 will have 2 reserved addresses that cannot be used i.e. the network address and the broadcast address.

OP you'll probably have to put in addresses for DNS servers if you are using a static IP - try this and see if it solves your problem. Give a look at the screen shot attached, the dialog box is from Win2k but there's something similar in XP and probably Vista as well.

You were OK with your 192.168.1.10 address but you need a few other things as well. As others have said, the network mask needs to be 255.255.255.0, and the default gateway should be the same as your router's IP address, i.e. 192.168.1.254, and you need to fill in the DNS servers as well. You can either put in the two addresses given on Eircom's support page or (usually) again the address of the router itself which will then proxy DNS requests to the appropriate Eircom servers.

Alternatively you could enable static DHCP on the router which would make it give the same IP address to your PC every time.
