I'm all set for another good day today, although I'm going to be awol from this evening for a day or two. Travelling is always a bit of a challenge to stay on track, it's hard to prepare for and it's hard to know if you'll have the right foods available to you when you need them. But healthy living is all about choices and no matter how poor your choices may seem, there's always a healthier option.

Aye, I'm at a wedding tomorrow so for the meal I'm going to ask for less spud*, more veg and no sauce on the meat...they're going to love me :D

*If there are roast spuds I WILL be having one! That can be my cheat for the week.

BTW, I'm down 3 lb this week already :) Hope the wedding doesn't undo this. Must watch out for the booze! No Guinness??? Argh!

Right, I've had a good week I think.

Ate clean, this would be pretty much usual: muesli for breakfast, chicken salad for lunch and chicken/fish and steamed veg for dinner. I'm lucky in that I don't like sauces or condiments at all - mayonnaise, salad dressing, etc, euch no thanks. To whoever Gem replied to the other day about eating like this - stick to it, your taste buds will thank you for it. I used to be mad for heavily processed ****e food but no more. Can't get enough of the good stuff now and processed junk turns my stomach.

Got in three lunch time sessions in the gym tuesday to thursday and a (short) cross country run last night. Gym has been some stretching (proper, as in going for full splits again), a fast (for me) mile or so on the treadmill and some fairly light dumbbell weights.

Off on holiday tomorrow, so haven't bothered with a proper weights/running/etc program until I get back. I took measurements but aren't to be bothered until I get back into a stable routine about how they go.

We're headed to Morocco for the guts of a fortnight, and planning stuff like hiking up in the Atlas mountains and other activities while there so there'll be no serious cheating I hope. Considering the staples of the local diet it mightn't be too hard to eat reasonably clean.

Best of luck folks, keep it up. I'll be thinking of ye!

Day 5 - so far so good!

Got myself a gym buddy and we're trying to go 3 times a week. It's working so far but may be a little early to tell!
nothing so complicated as most of the work outs here but it's a start - I've alot of body fat to loose rather than honing my muscular appearance :)

Have all my measurements but not feeling brave enough to post them yet!

    Typical Food Day
Breakfast: all bran and natural yogurt
    Snack: small box of raisins
Lunch: tomato soup with a small bread roll
    Snack: raisins or a banana
Dinner: pork chop/chicken breast/salmon fillet (lots of herbs and spices), rosted veg and small portion of pasta with a tomato sauce
Other: about 4 cups of tea during the day with skimmed milk

    Exercise
Gym - Monday, Wednesday and Friday: Treadmill, bike, cross trainer - (about 20 minutes on each - light to moderate cause I'm a complete noob to the whole exercise thing) and some weights machines.
Not sure about the weights yet - have to get one of the gym instructers to give me a few pointers!

Thursday - Walk home from work. It takes about an hour - same as if I got the bus!

Sunday - Haven't really planned anything for Sunday yet but I'll do something - might brave the gym on my own!

Any and all suggestions welcome :)

Why is it that now that I'm getting up and having breakfast in the mornings (muesli.. yock!) that I'm starving by 11am. This was never the case before?!?! I was always fine until lunchtime once I had my usual pint of water and tea to keep me going. Now I'm counting down the minutes to lunch, even with a banana in between!

    Ideas?!

Day 5 - And I feel great ! Have not had one ounce of crap so far. Tonight I am going to house party which I am sure will consist of lots of finger foods and I am determined that I am not gonna have any of it ! Hit the gym this morning so Im all set for the day ! :p

I am far far from an expert but, your body goes all night without food and if you don't eat when you wake up you continue to starve it. I think this slows your metabolism down.

If you eat first thing in the morning your metabolism gets a little kick so by lunch time I suppose it wants more food

You're adapting! Don't forget that most people don't eat regularly enough to keep their metabolism high. It's a safe bet that most Irish people have a bowl of Cornflakes, slice of toast for breakfast (if even any of that) and don't eat again for another 4 hours til they horse lunch into them. Then between say 1 o clock and maybe 5 o clock they have nothing but coffee and chocolate and crisps from the vending machine to tide them over til a big dinner at 6 or 7 (or even later).

I should know I used to do the same! In a job a few years back I'd have lunch round 12.30, cup of tea and maybe a bar of chocolate round 3 and then wouldn't eat again til nearly 8 o clock. And that was just normal, saw nowt wrong with it. Needless to say I wasn't fit!

Now, however, I eat little and often, and I can't go more than 3 hours without eating - I'd be starving. My brother told me yesterday evening round 8.30 after he had a couple eggs that he hadn't eaten since 1 o clock that day:eek: And he had gone for a swim before having the eggs! I'd have been absolutely famished.

Once you stoke the fire with food every few hours you can't go long periods without I figure!

Yip that does make sense alright!! I'll keep snacking on healthy stuff so in between - and have smaller meals I guess! hmm :)

what cork girl has described has previously been my problem. Only use to eat 3 meals a day, big meals at that with something before training. Last spring/summer I changed to 6-8 meals a day depending on how hard I'd train. For me since I've gotten use to smaller food sizes my body will automatically start to tire if I don't eat every 2.5/3hrs, of course prob that happens is that when you don't train as hard and eat the same the scales/bf goes up:(

Yeah, I literally would be starving with no energy to concentrate when I go too long without another small meal or snack.

On the part in bold, you might not have meant what I thought you did - but that is not necessarily true - small meals every 2-3 hours without training is still better than bigger meals 3 times a day without training.

I was weighing myself this morning. 11stone 5lb on my mechanical scale. Then tried a digital one in my house 10stone 11lb! Then another mechanical was 11stone 3lb. This was within minutes of each other. The digital one took a while to come on and had a faded LCD, so I guess the battery was low. Digital scales use load cells which measure force using voltage differences, so a faded battery can lead to lower readings. I had used this digital one a few times before and it was usually only 1 or 2lb different than my mechanical. I never trust digital stuff, part of my job is calibrating measurement devices and they always give trouble. I then checked and it only used a small battery.

Moral of the story, use the same scale, and make sure your battery is OK. I mentioned in another thread that you could put on a weight close to your own. e.g. have a stack of 80kg plates and put it on to check it reads the same each week.- use the same plates, not just any 8x10kg ones. they can all vary.

I don't trust the digital scales either! I use a mechanical scales but have a digital scales in the bathroom that put me nearly half a stone lighter last time I tried it. And it doesn't help that the reading varies if I step off and on again. It also measures body fat which is way off. It said 7% last time. When I was around 10 stone it said 3% and when I was 9.5 stone it said "ERROR"! :D

I had an assessment on Wednesday

My bodyfat % is down to 10.1% [down from 12.8 in September]
Measurements are the same [but with a lower bf% this should mean slight growth]
my Calfs are like an inch bigger

so I got a new programme, a lot of free weights, as I was on all machines before, and lots of upper body stuff

went the gym on thursday mornin and really felt it!

    all in all, goin good

This week has been a bit of a mixed bag with regards my eating and training.

Overall, I've been eating well and keeping my cals up (my biggest problem is that I tend to drastically under-eat - not intentionally, I'm just not very hungry most of the day so I really need to watch that)

I've had breakfast everyday, except for the first two days of the week when I was really sick and didn't eat very much of anything, just copious amounts of flat 7-up and toast!! Breakfast is another biggie for me, I *really* like getting that extra few minutes in bed and normally when given the choice of brekkie or bed, bed is gonna win out!! I'm doing well so far, so hopefully that'll continue!!

Training has been pretty awesome, I only got two sessions in coz I was sick like I said, but those sessions were good'uns... I got a PB for reps on my deadlift - 77.5kg x 3 x 5, and really surprised myself by managing to get through a decent enough leg session when I was in the midst of being sick!! :)

The digital scale I've used has me about 10 pounds heavier than any mechanical scale I've used. Having used 3 different Tanita scales they all had me the same weight, I've also tested out different mechanical scales one at home, one in the gym, two in a shop and one in my friends house and they all have me 10 pounds or so lighter than the digital ones. I obviously follow what the mechanical scales says as it's a much nicer number :D

Feckin' hell, my diet has pretty much been clean since the 3 of March, oh feckin' yeashh!

    I weighed 86.4kg this morning!
I have **** all time to exercise but I ran a km in under 5 minutes for the first time ever on Friday which I was happy with! And I've been standing for 12 hours a day at work...

The first three days after eating the Easter Sunday junkathon were terrible, but after that it's easy to stay away from junk food!

hmmm, sounds interesting, sure I'll be able to see how you are getting on on friday.

me I put up my stats tomorrow, they are quite interesting. I somehow managed to lose nearly an inch around my waist yet gained nearly 2 pounds:confused: I know a good bit of it is probably water retention from drinking on friday and ana day yesterday (I'm doing a bastardised anacat diet for the first few weeks) but I was carrying more last week after being in NY. I should drop around 4lbs next week hopefully (due to the BGRH I may be suffering the same effects next week though:D)

Hadn't exercised in almost a year, diet had gone to crap and it was showing. Started back after the Easter weekend and took measurements/photos etc. last Monday. This thread's come along at a good time! Count me in on this.

    From the Journal -

Weekend didnt go too well I guess, could have been better -

    Friday Night -
Had 5 Bottles beer which I thinks amounts to 10 units roughly, I infortunately ended up having a couple of slices of pizza too as one of the lads bought it for me and the G/F.

Lifting Circuit, started off lifting it but decided to try something different a little bit into it. Decided to see what my 1RM for the three main lifts were (never checked before). Worked out as follows -

    Bench - 80KG
    Squat - 100KG
    Deadlift - 140KG

Dont know how good bad those are but its nice to know. I felt I could do more with the squat but since I lift at home I dont have the relevant safety equipment, ill have to build an additional rack onto my squat stands or something.

    Saturday -
Was plastering all day sat so the diet suffered a bit, then ended up having a chow mein that evening because I was hungry and didnt have time to cook.

Was bolloxed hauling stuff around all dy but I feel the work done constitutes enough to cover a half hour of exercise for this day.

    Sunday -
Didnt go too bad, dinner portion sizes could have been downsized though.

Off day, went surfing for an hour.

Measurements noted for start of week two.

    Hi folks,

was just reading all these threads for the first time this morning. Am out of country at the mo, with college so I didn't see this thread as it was starting.

But I would like to follow it from today, week 2. If that's not allowed officially as I'm a week late, then that's fine. :)

I came back from a weekend away and decided I was going to start something today. When I checked the Fitness thread on Boards for motivation I stumbled upon this. Had already taken my body measurements and everything! Seemed like fate!

I would like to get my body tone back and lose a lot of body fat...I do not like what I'm seeing in the mirror these days. Would like to get healthier eating habits anyway as since I moved to Germany it's gone to hell! Oh land of beer and bratwurst! And many many cakes and breads :o

actually healthy eating gone to hell anyway for last four years...there was a lot going on in personal life and I think I found some consolation in wine for some reason. Then the bad habits stuck. But would like to get back on track now and would love to cut down to under ten units of alcohol a week. That would be great :) And get my diet and exercise back to something respectable. My face and body tell their own story so it's time to change.

As I say, if I'm too late officially, I'll just do it here myself, no biggie!

Best of luck to everyone, it's good to read all the posts as I'm learning all the time.
