(a friend of mine orders it 'blue', which is one step above rare

would it not be one step BELOW rare?

Depends on which way you go (up or down) :)
If Rare (raw) is at the bottom, and Well Done is at the top, then blue is one step above rare.

Nope. "Blue" is rarer than Rare. so it'd be below!! Med-Rare is above Rare

don't knock it till you've tried it. Start with Med-Well. If you enjoy that then go.. Med.
etc, etc.. I used to eat mine Well done but then I tried med-rare and my god!!!! it was sooo much better.

Passing through one night a few weeks ago and ate in this establishment, food was a little slow coming but was worth the wait. As to the steak cooking argument, I quote from their menu...

"RARE: A cool red centre, pink otherwise
MED RARE: A warm red centre otherwise pink
MEDIUM: Slightly pink centre, otherwise brown
MEDIUM WELL: Mostly brown with a grey centre, very little if any pink
WELL DONE: Overdone! Dry brown throughout with no sign of pink
VERY WELL DONE: Burnt – we take no responsibility for meat cooked to this degree !!"

(Asked for a card and was handed a menu)

Mine was Med Rare and was all but perfect. Pity they didn't have the dry aged sirlion, lack of demand apparently :(

Ate here last sat night. Tremendous! Best restaurant in Carlow by a mile. Arrived in and ordered a bottle of their most expensive champagne which was very nice. Had a rare fillet of steak myself which was perfectly cooked and the chicken wings to start which were SUPERB.

My wife does not eat red meat so she had the half roast chicken on a spit and it was very tasty. Might have that when I go back.

And yes the desert was 5 star. Followed by a Calypso coffee. The service must have dramatically improved since some of the other posts here as I could not fault it. Did not wait too long for dinner either.

All in all very happy and I saw a new part of carlow I had not seen before. Lovely setting at the river. Make sure to request a window seat……

    enjoy

Now that truly is a lovely review of a restaurant.

Well done to the Steak & Grape for a very happy customer.

You have me convinced to go there in the coming weeks.

Guys, take your steak cooking argument to PM's and leave this thread to experiences of subject eating house please.

Have revisited, service first class, food ditto. It won't be long before this place appears in one of the Sunday Mags I reckon. A real coup for Carlow IMHO.

it was fully booked on saturday night so I didn't go this weekend. Went to Germaines in Baltinglass instead.
Warm Chicken and Bacon salad to start
    Steak rare for the main
    then finished with Banoffee

    yyuummmmyy!!!!

    RARE FTW!! :P

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,514 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Haven't heard of Germaines.... sounds good! What else do they have? Whats the place like?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,602 ✭✭✭ShayK1

I haven't really tried much of the menu other that the steak. Its too good to turn down.
I've had Fajitas and a burger in there on different occassions but everything is really good.
They've a good menu with alot of variety, but as I said... its hard not to have the steak.
    Last might we had....

    Starters:
    1/2 lb of chicken wings
    Warm chicken and bacon salad
    Garlic Bread

    Mains:
    4 steaks

    Dessert:
    Banoffee
    Chocolate fudge cake
    Strawberry and rhubarb crumple
    Trifle

Throw in a few drinks and the bill was €35 each including a tip.

The place is nice too. Its a pub with a restaurant type area at the back but you can eat from the same menu in the bar, lounge or restaurant. Its usually busy so booking a table might be a good idea
