Can anyone tell me can i just walk into an O2 shop and buy a iPhone or do i have to sign up for a contract there and then? Also is there a limit in Ireland and the amount of iPhones you can buy?

no, in ireland you have to sign up to a contract. the plebs in the o2 stores have been told not to sell an iphone to anyone not signing a contract.

the only limit to the amount of iphone you can buy in ireland is your wallet.

this should really go into the iphone sourcing/unlocking thread
