Does anyone know if the job to replace a gearbox bearing (I don't know which one) will be expensive?
I was under the illusion that that familliar "wheel bearing" whine was from a wheel, but alas, no.
I was told this morning that it could be a gearbox bearing.
I looked up what I could on the vw-audi fourms and it looks like a common enough fault.
The engine is a VW 1.9 TDI 130 with the 6-speed box (Passat). The 6-speed box seems to be the fault here.
The car will be looked at by vw specialists in the morning and I am dreading the news !

    Thanks for any info.

I feel for you,it could be a clutch release bearing, what mileage is on the engine?

Is there any knocking or vibration? is the whine very obvious?

Well if its the drive shaft bearing its not a big fix but if its the release bearing you will have to splash out. I wouldn't think it is the release bearing becasue its not a common problem.
A release bearing won't make a whining sound as far as I know.

I had a clutch bearing problem which you could hear only when I buried the clutch. Fine once in gear. It lasted all of 3 weeks before it gave up on the M50. Whine for 3 weeks, knocking for 1 day and bang no clutch. Knocking sounded like someone under the bonnet with a hammer hitting the engine. Should have seen the looks I was getting from guy in other lane in traffic just before it gave up. Does the decscription sound anything like yours?

Anyway, they will not bother changing just the bearings as the labour time will be costly. They will put in a whole new clutch which is not cheap, and the labour will be low. Charged just shy of a 1000 for one on 04 Mondeo.

Hope it is something simple. Good luck.

No knocking, just a whine over 40mph and yes it is obvious.
    The milage is 66k.

No knoking, just a whine and it doesn't matter if the cluch is in or out, in or out of gear, and teh faster you go the louder it gets, which could indicate a drive bearing.....I hope !!
    thanks for the replies !!

Well don't get the 6-speed box (in either) I have to replace the box. Second hand one could only be sourced in the UK. €1034.
They sent the wrong box to make matters worse and are saying that they didn't send the worng box and that it is the correct one. Not so.
The speedo isn't working and the fuel gage is gone wierd.
Its like a "live" fuel gage now. When you jam on the brakles, the fuel needle drops forward and "please refuel" alarm sounds and lights on the dash.
Anyway, to get to the point, I am amazed at the poor quality of the original gearbox. Apparently this is common with VW gearboxes.
Having mine rebuilt is a no-no too. My mechaic tells me that a rebuilt box is not the way to go. Most of the rebuilt boxes that he gas seen have given trouble within months and you don't have any real guarentee that the box is going to last.
This is a very costly fix including labour. He had to drop the subframe to get the old box out.
Fu**ing nightmare. I have lost all faith in VW and their overrated products. I will never again buy a VW.
    Back to Peugeot for me.
