I came out to my car this afternoon to find my battery flat. I went to ask services for the number of the guys who drive around in the UCD jeep. They wouldnt give it to me, they said its against insurance policy to jump any cars. When in fact I know of 2 people who have been jumped by the UCD jeep in the past yr !
What is the story- has anyone else been jump started by them ?
I always thought those guys were good for nothing and this just proves it ! Driving around all day, you'd think they would be glad of something to do !

Unfortunately 'insurance' and 'health and safety' are quickly catching up with 'unions' as top reasons why nothing works in this country. Did you have your own jump leads? What did you do in the end?

  • Registered Users Posts: 372 ✭✭Ado86

No I don't have jump leads- will be getting some now though ! I would have jumped it off a friends car if I had !
I ended up calling the AA but had to wait for over an hour ! Then the UCD jeep swans up to me when the AA van arrived, I felt like telling him where to get off !

Yeah happened to there last week. Had to call the AA aswell. UCD wouldnt jump it which is a bit of a pain as I have seen them do it before. But that was a little blonde girl :):) . Now I keep jump leads in the back of the car and my friends with cars sweet :D

That is fairly bent of the security, but I'd say if you flagged down the jeep rather than rang the number you'd have had a better chance of getting a jump!

I keep jump leads in the back of my jeep for such an event. I've jump started 2 random people's cars around UCD in the last 2 years who had flat batteries.

Sounds like the start of a porno to me. I think UCD wont jump your car incase they make a balls of it. Then they owe you a new car.

I know they do f all and dont need a whole lot of qualifications but how hard is it to stick the two leads onto the battery- theyre even colour coded so u cant balls it up !

How hard is it to turn your lights off when you leave your car? Or did it just go spontaneously flat?

  • Registered Users Posts: 372 ✭✭Ado86

No need to be such a smart a**. I didnt leave my lights on when I left my car, they go off with my engine ! My battery/alternator is kicking up at the moment.

Services helped me change a flat tire when I got stuck in college late one evening during the summer. The guy on the reception desk took some convincing that I was actually a UCD student, even though I had my student card. The guy in the jeep was pretty decent about helping me. Imo it depends on the situation but services are supposed to be there to help the students.

Could you not have rang the switch and asked for the security desk? they would have patched you through to the jeep.
Or if you're ever stuck again walk over to the Conway and all the college cars/vans are across the way from it, I think the security men go into that building for their breaks.

happened to me in a friends car at midnight just leaving the library the night before my last christmas exam! they wouldnt jump-start it so we had to push (and when i say we i mean I) the car about 500m uphill to the nearest carpark and then get a taxi home! some preparation for an exam!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,117 ✭✭✭Tails142

Be careful as some diesel jeeps are 24v rather than 12v as they need more power to crank the engine such as the Mitsubishi Pajero - getting a jump off one of these could possible fry your electrics, especially if your car is modern with an ecu.

Lol, I presume you tried to push start it on the way?

Na, thats nothing to worry about. I have a 24V Pajero with 2 batteries and have jumped plenty of cars with it, you just hook the car up to one of the batteries. The problem is when you have to jump the Pajero, you need 2 cars for that!! Happened to me about a month ago... wasn't fun!!!

If they **** up your car they're liable and it's on their head. Most of the time services would like to help you, but it's not worth their job and it's official policy not to jump start cars.

Services are not there to provide a mechanical service for people who don't bother bringing their cars for repair. Try the AA or a good mechanic!

Out of interest, do you drive a car? Temperamental batteries and alternators can screw you pretty spontaneously. Anyway, no, services are not there to provide this service. Neither am I there to direct visitors around the campus, but I end up doing that quite regularly. I understand that they don't want to be held liable for damaging a car, but I take issue with the whole notion of 'Not my job, not gonna do it' - why can't people help each other out a bit more?

I love how non drivers get uppity in these car related threads. End of story AA will jump your car while the college will not. They should have a jump pack and provide this service as there as so many car parks ( I got a jump off the car park attendants in St.Stephens Green because being a car park, they have jumper packs), its why I assumed UCD services drove around in big jeeps .... the backs of those very expensive 75k landrovers must be empty so......

They have big jeeps so that they can cross the campus in a hurry obviously.

well in that case they should be aphibious incase they need to cross from one side of the lake to the next :)

Maybe they are amphibious and you just don't know about it.

You've got it all wrong. Services should simply be equipped with jet packs. The money raised from the return of fees can be used to fund these. Also, Librocop should get an extra powerful one so that he can police all libraries at once.
