Lord haw haw...a good nazi?

Hi..... I'm doing a project on lord haw haw for my leaving cert and I was just wondering if any one had any interesting information about him? thank you

He's dead, that makes him a good nazi in my book.

Have you tried the BBC website, there is a lot of WWII history on there and I'm sure I read a bit about Lord Haw Haw on there.

There was a biography published in the last 12 months or so. There was also a documentary on BBC I think, to coincide with this.

It should be remembered that prior to working for the nazis William Joyce worked for the British as an informer and agent for the Black and Tans against the Irish people . He was forced to flee from Co Galway with the IRA hot on his heels , although still being very young his activities were taken seriously enough for them to make an actual attempt to kill him. Although only a teenager he was a fanatical British loyalist who also carried a gun to school .Justice caught up with him in the end after he bit the hand that fed him .
He also bears a weirdly striking resemblance to the self procalimed political propagandist Eoghan Harris in my opinion.

Born in America of Irish parents, raised largely in Ireland where in his youth he was a committed Loyalist who supplied information on rebel activities to the authorities.

Emigrated to Britain and made false declarations to obtain a British passport. That was his undoing as it made him a British subject and therefore liable to its treason laws, for which the penalty was, and indeed still is, death.

He's also buried in Prospect Hill cemetary in Galway City. Spent his childhood in a house in Salthill. Nopt sure why he'd be considered a good nazi though.

The death penalty is still on the statute books in britian ?? Didn't know that.

BTW, he got a very bad scar on his face when he was slashed during an anti fascist protest in London. Apparently the scar burst open as he hung......ouch !!!!

Also, I think he may have had a daughter who took part in the documentary that was on the History channel a while back ?

the official death penalty still exiss for high treason and defacing her majestiy's dockyards. the method used is still hanging, but as the last gallows in Britain was removed thirty years ago it is not likely to actually happen. there is no longer an official hangman either.

There was an interesting bit on the BBC site about his wife as well. She was British and broadcast her own messages. It is believed that Joyce did a deal that cost him his life but saved hers, she drank herself to death in the 70s.

Fred, I think you're wrong. The remaining capital offences (both military and civilian) were repealed in 1998 in order for the UK to sign up to the ECHR. I was still living in the UK at the time and remember a couple of articles on it.

The death penalty cannot be restored unless or until the UK leaves the EU.
