Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Right, I want to get a new laptop and would appreciate a little help.

-It will only be used for poker and internet. Won't be used for gaming at all
-I'd like it to have as high a resolution as possible
-I'll be connecting a second monitor to it if that matters
-I don't know anything about anything else!

So ideally I'd like a cheap 'good' laptop without cutting too many corners. I don't need anything too fancy (I think?), so what should I be looking for?

Not an expert myself but I would say concentrate on screen size.Pay the extra few bob for a 17" over the standard 15".

obviously this is the best place to ask about poker laptops... what else is a laptop for, we don't have a porn forum (that i know of) so this is the next best place to ask...

hehe I know! I figured that lots of people here would have gone through the same process though and would either own or know exactly what I should be looking for
    method in my madness ;)

Don't bother getting a 17' screen if you want it to be portable. If that doesn't matter, PC world do a few 21 inch laptops. Prob cost ye 2k http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0082617632.1206527443@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccddadedjifhjflcflgceggdhhmdfho.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=534391&category_oid=-27749
But the specs are pretty unnecessary for poker.

Here is a 17' dell for €627 that will do the job for poker http://outlet.dell.com/Emea_Dfo/EuDispatcher?target=SpecPage&serviceTag=FX9AFK90&sessionID=HqyLGvhY!-186332053!-1966256866!1206528008856

I asked this is the computer section before and you actually need very little in the way of specs if it's only for poker and browsing etc. Vostro would do you & they're dirt cheap

Go for the dell vostro 1700 with 2ghz processor and the 1920x1200 res screen, best value out there by far for 17".

Get more memory. 1 gig is too low on Vista I'd imagine. An extra gig will only set you back 50 quid or so i'd imagine, but I am way too lazy to check.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,894 ✭✭✭✭phantom_lord

get 3gb for vista imo, it's worth it. ram costs nothing these days anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,280 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

Defo get 3 gigs of ram if you're running Vista.
Dell is your best bet if you want something cheap enough, good warranty etc etc

i know less about computers than u man lol! havent a clue what the resolution is but the picture looks great to me. u can fit 4 pokerstars tables on it with basically no overlay and the writing is still big enough to read etc.
i assume u can add monitors. cant u do this with any laptop? like it has all the connections in the back of it. besides u dont need extra monitors if its just for poker i play 9 tables on mine with no problems. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,238 ✭✭✭digiman

Resolution and RAM are the most important imo. The higher the resolution the more you can fit on your screen basically without overlap. You can have 6 ipoker tables open in normal view without much overlap.
Get as much RAM as you can afford, this will allow you to run more programs at the same time without some of them freezing etc. Vista is very RAM intensive, it will take ages for you laptop to boot up and then all your programs will be fighting for the RAM and slow them all down, so get 2GB as a min.
I have a Dell XPS M1710, its got a 1920x1200 screen, 2GB Ram which is the bare minimum now a days I think. The laptop is great for playing poker, datamining 16 tables with no problems at all and having both PT and HM open whilst importing the hands.

I suppose its more to do with the people on here will use it for the same reasons. Having said that i saw that champ had a thread in the computer forum about getting a lappy for the same purpose - read a bit of it - he set out his wants and saw one that he liked - then some guy recommended something else - that seems good and is cheap. Don't know what he did in the end... hmm maybe i'll go look for it and post the link here.

    ah found it(hope u don't mind champ): http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055251396

You don't think a bigger screen is better for poker?

I guess most people will just connect it to a decent size external monitor anyway. As has been mentioned, I think the resolution it can support is more important.

When you change to a new laptop, Is there an easy way to transfer all you're stuff i.e. pt, holdem manager etc.

When I changed from desk top to laptop I just emailed pt told them the situation and got new reg key, but now I have so much stuff this would be a nightmare.

Can they be put on a cd or something? thanks.

Did anyone buy any of these and how did it work out, looks like my pc died on me and i have 2 decent monitors 1900 x 1200 (24") and 1600 x 1200 (21") so i dont need to buy monitors just the tower or a laptop.

Im open between choosing a laptop and a desktop but as im probably going to be doing some travelling in the next year or two and will need a good laptop that seems a better option but with a holiday coming up money is tight but i guess i havent much choice as with no pc i have no way of earning money.

Some things, im liking the look of the Dell XPS 1710, can i add 2 monitors to this or just 1 and is there a good alternative or am i better of getting a dell xps desktop with dual graphics card for 1/2 the price since money is tight?

Lastly are most of the issues solved with Vista yet regearding software like Holdem Manager, ibolide and all the other poker software or am i better off sticking to XP?

i bought an xps m1710, havent tried connection 2 external monitors but i've been lead to believe I can by connecting to both the vga and dvi ports. I have vista, was worried about it at first buts its way better than XP. I'm having some problems with HM at the moment but I think that may be more to do with the site im playing on as opposed to vista.
I recommend this laptop, its brilliant.

I would second this, brilliant laptop, screen res is superb and its also very fast. The only bad thing I would say about it is that its not really a laptop as its so big and heavy and you need a cushion if you are going to put it on your lap as the heat of it is something else.
I have HM and PT on it and play regulary on stars, full tilt, ipoker and everest and have had no problems with them when using Vista
