Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I don't but my cousins would since my dad is named John.

So many common names could be used here and it'd work, John, Patrick, Mary, Paul, James, Anne etc..

I'm going to call my first boy Caesar Botolf <my surname>.. He'll thank me in time :D

It was the lack of an option for those of us with an Aunty Jaguar that made me do it.

Your parents were not being very inventive with the names if the had to name two of your sisters Mary. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,839 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Or his wife could have a sibling called Mary ;)

I've two auntie marys, one from each side, i think i read on the paper last week that years ago in Ireland it was only right for the eldest daughter to be called Mary, and apparently there have been a lot of influencial marys in irish history! So there ....
I'm the eldest but i'm not a Mary!!

i have 4. it gets really, really confusing.

So what do you call them ? Mary 1, Mary 2, Mary 3, Mary 4 --- ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,920 ✭✭✭cee_jay

I have 2 aunt Mary's - one on either side - both are the oldest girls in the families too.
Have an aunt Bernie and Ann - and my mum is Margaret - but there were 11 girls in that family so I am sure my poor grandmother was beginning to run out of names!
Have 2 uncle John's and Michael's too - on both sides as well!

    now there's an idea!

ordinarily we use married names. but that makes things even more confusing because not everyone uses that, and 3 of them have the same married name. and some of the married names are the same as another's maiden name...

it's hilarious when they all meet together.

    "howya Mary?"
"not too bad, Mary, and yourself?"
i'm good now, Mary, i'm good... and Mary how'ya keepin'?"

and on, and on, and on...

No, but again - my mother's name is Mary, and she's an Auntie Mary to quite a number of people (I've loads of cousins).

Nah, a coincidence like that could never happen with such a rare name as Mary.

Not only do I have an Aunt Mary on both my mom and dad's side of the family, I also have an Uncle John on both as well. We always used to call my mom's aunt "Auntie Mary", the other two didn't get the full title.
