Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi

I am planning on going away for about a year and I was wondering what is the best way to cover your medical insurance? VHI only offer 6 months cover unless you upgrade, which is very expensive. I will be in Australia for the most part and was wondering would you be able to take out medical cover down there for 6 months or so? Or are there other independant companies that provide 1 year cover?

Some of the travel insurance places also do backpacker/long trip policies eg http://ebs-backpacker.ina-box.co.uk/

A crowd I used to work for provided us with travel/health insurance provided by these guys http://www.vanbreda.com/

No idea of the cost but it covered us everywhere, war zones, the lot.

    Hi

I’ve been in Australia now for a year now. We took out the VHI’s medical cover when we were coming over and it was expensive but worth every penny. It is far better than any of the others and I looked at them all. But it is also 5 times the price of the cheapest alternative

Just to let you know, The Australian Government has signed a reciprocal health care agreement with Ireland. The agreement provides Irish with access to emergency medical services but does not provide for ongoing treatment of existing health conditions.

Basically you get free emergency treatment in Australian hospitals. This covers x-rays, blood tests etc. You do need to bring your passport with you to the hospital to get this.

However, it does not cover MRI’s or ambulance fees,(emergency or not) or ongoing outpatient or inpatient treatment. As we learned, MRIs and ambulance can be very costly here ($600 for the MRI and $850 for the ambulance). Our VHI covered this, so make sure the policy you take out covers what ever is not covered by the reciprocal health care agreement.

Here is a link to the agreement, but I’m sure you can find lots of information online:

Good luck and you will love Australia!
