Any mechanics out there to help with this:
97 VW Polo Classic 1.4 petrol, recently oil light keeps coming on. Also there is a "put-put-put" sound from the engine when its running. Would this mean that the engine is blown, if not would it be the oil pump?
BTW, Where is the oil pump?

Is this "put-put-put" sound happening when the engine is idling? If it is it may be that the engine is running too slow (check your rev counter) which, in turn, will mean that the oil pump is running slow and may not be generating enough oil pressure. The oil pump is driven by the crankshaft and is located in the crankcase.

No it doesnt do it when its idling...it only does it when the car warms up a bit.

Right so. It may be one of a few things.

    1. It could be that you do have low oil pressure due to a faulty component, but it could easily be that the strainer gauze is blocked. This gauze acts like a primary filter and prevents large particles from entering the oil pump to cause damage.

    2. The oil pressure sensor/switch could be faulty - not uncommon on a VW.

    3. You oil pump is kaput, but this is a rare fault and is unlikely.

You best course of action is to have an oil pressure test carried out to determine if you have sufficient oil pressure. What's important here is that the oil pressure is measured as the light/buzzer comes on. If you do have low pressure then begin by having the gauze inspected. If the pressure is within the manufacturers spec then replace the oil pressure sensor. If the gauze is clear then it may be the oil pump. It's also possible that it could be wear in a main/big end bearings that are allowing oil to escape, but if that's the case you should be hearing lots of knocking noises from the engine.
