The prices may work out like that in theory. But a member of my family has been charged 3 different prices for the same journey on 3 evenings close to each other a few weeks ago. She wouldn't bother complaining though.

Look I am aware that some drivers are capable of ripping people off, just like some solicitors rip people off, some Garda have been arrested this year. Every sector in society has bad apples. But you did not read how the fare works. You will unlikely ever get charged the same money for the same fare, because the price is linked to both time and distance. the full fare is met in 1 klm or 180sec. Stopping at a traffic light shortly into the fare could effectively take 180 seconds and cost you €4 . if you meet all green lights, you are away with it. Time does not automatically come into a fare. If your speed is above 21klm you fare is calculated on distance alone. As 21klm is running speed, your car has to be going pretty slow or stoped to kick into time mode. Hope this answers your questions.

    Taxi issue in Waterford City

    Dear Deputy Deasy,

Your recent e-mail to the City Manager and attachment from,
    Waterford Taxi Driver refers.

The Council is very much aware of the issues raised by the Taxi Drivers and we have met with their representatives on a number of occasions recently both at official level and through our Transportation SPC.

The main issue that the taxi drivers have is understandable - there has been an almost 900% increase in the number of taxis plying for hire in Waterford City since national de-regulation of taxi licences in 2003 and this has not been (and could never be) matched by a proportionate increase in demand which is obliviously putting pressure on those working in the business.

Correspondingly, the Council is not in a position to provide a proportionate increase in the number of taxi ranks in the City centre as
the space simply does not exist in the confines of a compact City centrearea which is where all of the taxi drivers would like to locate.

We are however, following a meeting with the taxi drivers yesterday, considering a number of options which may allow us some small increases in spaces at the existing taxi ranks and the provision of some additional night-time ranks which may alleviate some of the pressure.

    Regards,

    Fergus Galvin

Here it is from those in Authority. If any other buisseness was facing such an uncertain future which employed over 700 people in the city, wouldn't we be shouting. A taxi regulator more interested in preserving her job than telling the transport minister how it really is.
