Thanks Spurious , had viewed that photo before, but hadn't saved it. My mother Maureen Doyle lived at 29 Parliament Street as a child in the 40's and I believe her Grandmother Elizabeth Matthews nee Ging ( Stafford Street ) is the family connection. Any information greatly appreciated, a previous poster some years ago. ( G locfk) seemed to also be related but has not posted since 2008

I wonder is this part of your family:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Palmerstown/Chapelizod_Town__Part_of/40771/

(click on "show all information" and you'll see that the father of the family describes his profession as "grocer and spirit merchant").

They may have been, as they used to put it, "theatricals" -

Gings, another theatrical costumier, was to be found on the other side of the street and I found a picture of Gings in Dame Street Click on the link to see it.

That should give you a start, and you'll find that if you follow one thread it leads to another. Good luck!

Hi StickGuy, you could always try the boards.ie Genealogy forum. The folks there will be able to give you some great guidance on how to trace this information.

Hello excellent thread, by any chance would anyone have photos of James Street in the 1950s and 1960s? My Grandfather had a barbers there at the St Catherine's Church end. I remember being in the shop as a kid in the mid/late 70s and from memory it was a traditional barbers with the old leather chairs and large mirrors. Thanks for any help!

Does anyone have any images of Fleet Street Temple Bar pre 1995?

I'm doing a project about the street and am finding it extremely difficult to find photos of it...most of the old photos are of Merchants Arch and Essex St

    Thanks in advance!

Also early photos of Lower Rathmines Road, the Town Hall side. All the photos I've seen obscure the shop names with canopies. I'd love to see some where you can see the names over the shops.

Would also like to see some old photos of the old shopping centre were the Travel Lodge is currently at.

I'm also trying to find some old photos of Charlemont Street from the 80's and early 90's before the hotel was built and when a pub called An Beal Bocht once stood.

Photo showing Annesley Bridge Road in 1898, alongside what is now Fairview Park.

Great pic, I can make out Gaffney's in the newer photo, but was it in this one?

Couldn't find Fleet Street but here's Meeting House Lane in Temple Bar pre 1995,
    1888 in fact.

They are 1950s houses. That green field infront of those houses was a working farm right up until they torn it up to start the port tunnel digging

I've been looking through this thread for ages now.

I'm just wondering; does anyone on here have (or know of) photos of anything Garda related? I love seeing stuff from the 70s and 80sbut just anything in general would be great.

My Grandfather had a butchers on Drumcondra Road. It was called Cullen Bros. and was opposite Fagan's pub. I think it's now an Indian restaurant if that helps!

Anyway, it was recently his 90th birthday and I would love to give him a photo of his old shop, if anyone had anything.

    Thanks in advance.

Sadly not. Some of those pics are listed as Drumcondra but are other parts of Dublin. Thanks for the response though.

Try the local history society - bound to be one… if there isn't, try these guys http://marinolocalhistorysociety.com and they might a) know if there's a local history society b) know of such a photo.

Here are a few documentaries I produced in 2004 & 2006 about Baldoyle and the surrounding areas. Not very historic at this stage but it does show the huge changes that have occurred in those short years with regards to massive developments in the immediate vicinity.

Blatantly stealing this from another site, but there's some great and fascinating aerial pictures of Dublin from around the 1930s/1940s on this site,

    http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/asearch?search=dublin

On page 2 there's some photos of Bannon Road in Dublin, anyone know where that is now ?

It's a typo. Should be Bannow Road, which is still in Cabra.

Was thinking it was something like that, as they have misspelling of Clontarf later, they have Clow Tarf Estates.
