The 30gig limit counts both ways, so I'm guessing the upload of which you blocked out brings you over the 30 gig mark. This does show something quite worrying though, unless you have been uploading scary amounts (can't tell because you have it blanked out) you should just be slightly over the limit. Which means that it might be a blanket throttling of everyone over the limit even if you are just barely over.

When it happened to me, the combined total wasn't over 30. Just over 20. My upload stats are low as I don't run torrents or upload much of anything.

Ok so upload counts, but would that not be 30GB up and 30 GB down? not 30GB's in total?

That's what I should have as well, according to this from the bt support pages:
Broadband Option 1: Data usage limit of 10GB per month

Broadband Option 2: Data usage limit of 20GB per month

Broadband Option 3: Data usage limit of 30GB per month

For example, if you have BT Broadband Option 1 then you are entitled to download 10GB of data per month as well as uploading 10GB per month.

If you exceed either the upload or download limit BT reserve the right to charge you for the transfer of any additional data (at 1 cent per MB including VAT) and also the right to suspend or permanently disconnect your Internet connection.

    Their words not mine
The 30gig limit counts both ways, so I'm guessing the upload of which you blocked out brings you over the 30 gig mark.

If you look at the warning from bt on my screenshot it clearly says 'you have exceeded your download limit' Nothing is mentioned about upload, which is low anyway.

On 3meg in Swords, 47down 39up and I wasn't throttled yet, but the second they do I will be saying bye bye to BT.

I wonder if the letters BT stand for Byte Throttlers?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,417 ✭✭✭JohnC.

Yeah, damn them for allowing you to go well over the T&Cs you agreed to before taking any sort of action  It doesn't seem that unreasonable to me. And it could be worse. Take Virgin in the UK who throttle you if you download more than 300MB between 4 and 9.

Get a business package, there is no cap

Esat are only looking at download usage, not the overall.

The warning will only appear when you have reached either one of the two.

And I wouldnt be too cocky when threatening BT of leaving... first your contract must be over and second they can make you pay for the overuse. But, to be honest, I doubt they will do that I am guessing that its better for them if all their "abusers" leave... then, they can put things back the way it was...

Do you need to have a business to get a business package or can anyone get such a connection?

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

It does count. I was told this only yesterday by BT.
Well... actually its in the T&C on their site.. if you actually bother to look :p:o

I'm over this month too - by about 15gb so far.. (1mb line - 10gb cap [seriously, 10gb?! wtf like])

Damn UT3 maps! some are >170mb :pac:

+1 I'm getting the same thing. Maybe try resetting your router to make a new connection. I really hope they aren't going to hold my bandwidth usage in arrears. It could be 5 months before thats paid off

just rang BT again they said it wil be a few weeks before it goes back to normal

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 72 ✭✭PotBelly

Same thing happened to me. I spent the weekend changing routers testing connections etc. Rang bt and the smug arswhole told me I was over my limit.

    221.53 gig downloaded
    77 gig uploaded

I couldn't believe it. He also said that it would be reset on 1st of april - more like the 20th april.

Do the business packages have a download limit?

BT offer Business Broadband packages that have no limits or FUP....or atleast they didn't when I used them, however when I last used them they were only available in LLU area's

Perhaps UTV with the unlimited* option would be more suitable for your needs?

What a shambles BT have become for a company that showed such great promise a few years ago. It was bad enough throttling people until months end, though why I was throttled I don't know as my usage meter says I wasn't online at all, but it would now seem that they have broken the throttle cable and can't get us going again. All they were offering to begin with were some of the lowest download speeds in the world with their 3mb "Deluxe Package", but now the Deluxe package only delivers twice dial up speed. They should really think of getting out of telecom market if they can't deliver a proper service.

Ok, that's just about enough. I'm switching to Smart tomorrow morning.

I cannot believe they've now extended the throttling into April. I'll admit I was quite a bit over the limit but that's not hard when the limit is so absurdly low.

Maybe they're just trying to get rid of us, some bean counter has probably worked out that we're costing them more than we're paying them, but whatever. I've had enough of their stone age service.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,752 ✭✭✭Bohrio

Just to make things clear the usage will not be reset the first of the month. The line will go back to normal as soon as your usage has gone below a certain amount of gbs.

I understand that its very annoying but remember that, up until now, you have been downloading as much as you wanted and never been cut off, charged or throttled.

Remember the T&C. If you really need no limits download are you are going to be downloading a great amount of data, move to an ISP that offers you this kind of service.

Smart if you can otherwise UTV, but remember, UTV is BT... Who else offers no cap? I think IBB does...

    Your choice!

Be aware that downloading 270 gb means a CONSTANT download rate of 110 kBps....

I wouldnt want you as my door neightbour!

I think what people would like to know is why a relatively huge company like Esat BT can't offer us a similar service to smart et al?

We're limited to 3mbps in many places with an absurdly low download cap. Why should our next-door neighbours have to worry about contention ratios if we're downloading alot? It's 2008 ffs! There are ways of circumventing these problems.

I appreciate that they didn't go after us before and gave us some leeway (or quite alot probably), but that doesn't change the fact that the services esat are providing are beginning to look distinctly outdated.

Do you work for them, Bohrio? Is charging for the overuse likely to come into effect now too?

I think what people would like to know is why a relatively huge company like Esat BT can't offer us a similar service to smart et al?

Smart only offer this service in a small number of locations. In many locations BT are reselling the Eircom product, and this has its limitations.

BT wouldn't be a hige company if it didn't know how to make a profit, a handful of customers are using up a significant proportion of its bandwidth but paying nothing extra, there is no profit in that. The download cap is fine for the vast majority of people, it is hardly absurdly low as people on this thread claim.
