My sister's 1.4 206 has some kind of issue with it?
It will only allow you to select a high gear (possibly 3rd) - no others so I don't think its clutch.
The gearstick is fairly loose to move about but as I said, it will stick the car into gear (the same gear regardless of gear lever position).
There is also a bad smell almost like the smell off buring electrics. I don't think its electrical though.
    Any ideas? Gearbox fubared?
Is the same gearbox used on all 206's (02 IIRC)?

i had a 2001 1.4 206 a few years ago and the gearbox went, sounds like the same thing, all i can remember at the time is the gearstick being loose although luckily enough it was covered by warrenty
hope its not as serious in your sister's case

Have the gear shift mechanism looked at before condemning the gearbox. From what you describe, it sounds more like a shift problem.

She is having a mechanic call out to her in the coming days. I have given her advice on how to approach it so I'll let you know the outcome.

Given your location, I'd have to recommend Westland Peugeot - maybe the car is a bit old for main dealer work, but if not then give them a shout.

Cheers but she is over on the other side of the city!
A mechanic mate suggested getting it over to a g/b specialist in Baldoyle but she has contacted some local back street places to get them to give it a once over first.

I doubt its the gearbox alone(if at all) there wouldn't be a smell, per say, from a gearbox. Smell would generally be clutch related. I stand to be corrected of course.

I'd say the smell is from her revving the crap out of the engine to get the car moving and thus burning her clutch. For some reason the residual smell had the smae smell as burning electrics - but when I saw it there was nothing burning (partly because I didn't rev the gutts out of it!)

The smell is most likely from the clutch. But from what kbannon describes it doesn't sound like the clutch is the primary fault. The fact that there are gear selection problems leads me to believe that the the clutch may be slipping due to incorrect gear selection which appears to be down to a shift linkage problem which is causing the driver to pull away in the wrong gear.

Trying to start off in a higher gear puts a big load on the clutch i think so this would force the clutch to slip and thus the smell

You need to check all the gear lever link arms and bushes, sounds like excessive play in a linkage.

Teh linkage I'd say, however if had the time and a pliars, put it into 2nd (you might need to get into or under the engine) and leave it there, will save your clutch (the burning item) at least while you negotiate your way to a repair shop.

She got a mechanic to take a look at it and he said that a spring and clip were missing. All well now. Cheers
