Tyre trouble

I came out this morning to my car and found that my front right hand tyre wall had burst out in two places. It hadn't deflated so I presume it has an outer and inner wall.
The tyre is a federal 215 45 r17 fitted on an A4 diesel. I've had it on the wheel a year and never saw this coming. I regularly pump them and all that. When I examined it, I coud see where the tyre was cracking and that the cracking was connected to the tear.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what caused this to happen?

Was the tyre deflated last night when you parked the car up? a low profile tyre like that is very exposed to damage from a pot hole for example and it weakens the side wall causing a buldge or split.
Any chance some one could of slashed them? it happens...
