Seems like a the bedroom producer aspect of remixing is very in vogue (or in rainbows ) at the moment. We've got Radiohead releasing their stems, while not quite free, for beer money and plenty of big(ish) names like Manu Chao, Foals et al hosting remix contests for decent prizes and kudos. How about we agree on a tune off this

    http://reeemix.com/

and have a bash - even five or six entries would make it worthwhile. Less ****ing on about music and more making it I say :D

    Tis the way forward alright.

Someone offered me the multi-tracks from 'In-Utero' (is that right?) the other day. I think they are legit, possibly from Albini's website? (correct me if I'm wrong). My favourite was the 8 track master of Marvin Gaye's What's going on. Two drum kits, one track each...

I'll not be entering the competition though, time's tight. Besides I don't want my ass kicked by some kid in his bedroom with a Cuebase crack and a set of Behringer monitors:confused:

You can remix Nine Inch Nails tracks for free at http://remix.nin.com

never knew this existed! downloading a few of them as we speak. thanks for that!

if a few others could get together and decide on one of these i'd be well up for it. it'd be less hassel and a fair starting point. also, you can take a lot of these songs in lots of directions/styles so it'd be interesting what people come out with.

i'm hereby throwing down the gauntlet to all novices, armchair engineers and mixing maestros who frequent this board.

Right so - definitely enough enthusiasm to warrant a contest.

I've picked three fairly diverse tracks - Reggae/Dub, Alt Rock and House/Techno - so vote away. Polls close @ 12noon on Saturday 5th April and that will be our decided track. Stems are linked below

    Manu Chao
    http://www.politikills.com/les-remix.php

    Foals
    http://www.lastfm.de/group/Foals

    Deep Mariano & Guille
    http://www.feralcode-records.com/watd_remix_contest.php

One submitted mp3 per person. Only real rule is to refrain from using overly recognisable hooks/vocals from other (copyrighted) tracks - use your own discretion here, more to stop it from turning into a 'mash-up' contest as opposed to a proper remix contest.

When you're finished your track, master it down to a 192kb/s mp3 (or a similarly bitrated VBR mp3) and I'll put up a page and host the lot on my webspace. Final Submission date is 12noon on the 23rd April. I'll give 5 days for voting; the bragging rights are then allocated on the 28th April.

As an aside, someone might be so good as to knock up a little "listen/vote for my track here" sig banner, try and drag more attention to the music prod forum.

Requires logging in to get the stems as far as I can see - if you post me a direct link to the stems of the track then I'll add a link.

I picked three songs that didn't require any registration for simplicities sake - maybe another time.

    this sounds great!!

hopefully it works out better than the last time *we put up tunes remixed from frobishers song!!

*i use the term "we" very lightly as i think maybe only 2 or 3 people posted up what they done

although there seems to be a lot more interaction in this forum lately than ever before so might see more productivity which would be really cool.

Haven't had a chance to listen to the tracks yet so I haven't voted but i'd love to do this. I'll be getting a new Macbook Pro and a copy of Logic within the next week so this'll be a chance to flex it's muscles for the first time :pac:

would ye not prefer to do something original and let everyone play/learn?

why not do a chinese whisper

someone starts a track send it to the next guy who adds a track until everyone has had a peice of the action.

even studio rat would play as he wont tarnish his reputation

Right, the mob has apparently spoken. In a landslide 2 to 1 victory  the chosen remix tune is.....
Deep Mariano & Guille Quero - WATD
    http://www.feralcode-records.com/WATD_remixpack.zip

To listen to the original go here - http://www.resonantvibes.com/product_info.php?type=track&id=42310

It's a 6 minute long prog house track - massive scope for all sorts of interpretation here.

If you're participating please throw up a post saying as such - just so the rest of us don't feel so lonely :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,790 ✭✭✭cornbb

I'll jump in on this one, presuming I get my copy of Logic soon... sorry, I completely forgot to vote though!

i'll be doing this. puttin it in my stack of remixes to do. That pile is building a little higher every day, even if some of them are paid jobs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 845 ✭✭✭red dave

    Has anyone started theirs yet?

Seeing as how only 5 voted with myself included in that; have the other 4 started on theirs?

Or are there others who didn't vote and are still going to try it?

I had voted for "Foals - Electric Bloom" as I would have liked working with the vocals and few nice melodies so was bit dissapointed with the chosen track but am still attempting a version of it none the less...

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,790 ✭✭✭cornbb

I started messing with it a couple of days ago. Hmm, what to do, what to do...

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,278 ✭✭✭mordeith

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,790 ✭✭✭cornbb

I've closed the poll as we've already decided on a tune and don't want to confuse people, hope thats cool.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,278 ✭✭✭mordeith

Where are we uploading our remixes to?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,790 ✭✭✭cornbb
