Oh I'm so sorry to hear that and he is a real STUNNER. So glad he will pull through though the poor fella. He sounds like he is in good hands and listen you'll never be able to reconcile how cruel people can be, I've tried and tried to understand it but I just can't.

Big hugs to the fella, Thank God he wasn't killed.

OP I feel your pain. A few years ago my dog was knocked down on xmas eve. Entirely my fault as I had him off the lead in my estate but it was 11pm so I thought it would be fine. But he got cracked by a jeep.

The guy was a saint and had his own dog in the back. Got an on call vet and a whopping bill but the guy paid it. Dog was ok but never strayed more than 5 foot from me after it.

Even longer ago a friends dog was knocked down the an Ice cream van, the fcuker just pulled up and started selling ice creams while the dog bled to death about 20 foot away.

Sorry to hear that. Have a Golden Retriever myself (see post pics of your pets thread :) ). Twelve now but was knocked down by a van when he was younger. It was horrible seeing him hurt. He was on the ground and trying to drag himself forward as if trying to get away from the pain. His jaw hit the road and he skidded which tore his lip down his chin. Hurt his hind leg badly but eventually healed. The driver was an ignorant yoke who was bitching and moaning because there was a dent in his precious van. Didn't give a toss about the fact an animal was in agony.

Not directing this at anyone in particular, but it is the dog owner who is liable if a loose dog runs out on a road and is hit by a car. (Dog Owner is liable for damage to the car too).

I just wanted to point that out.

Sorry to hear about your dog OP and I'm glad he's pulling through.

thanks everyone and i know what you are saying about liability. he's such an active dog and i had all the gates locked but he went down through the field and managed to escape even though we have barriers up.

Yes I know, though the chances of a small dog doing damage to a very large mitsubishi jeep are pretty small!
But as said above it was my own fault.

The OP's point was that the guy didn't stop to help or check that the dog was okay. Regardless of who is at fault, it only human decency (something that doesn't exist a lot of the time nowadays) to stop and see if there is any way you can help. It's not like a dog can take out a mobile and call a vet for help.

I dont disagree with you, it is only common decency.

I was pointing out something I felt needed to be pointed out thats all.

Poor dog! he's a beauty, it's a shame he has to lose his eye because of whatever scumbag ran him over. even if he wasn't supposed to be on the road any decent person would stop and try and help. They just drive like lunatics, way too fast.

Just went up to the vet. Rosco is in an awful way. cannot move and they think he might be brain damaged. the swelling in his eye has gone down but its closed. he did kinda know me but just lay back down.

Its amazing how resilient they can be OP. A little time to allow the swelling to subside will tell alot more. I had a dog who lost his eye when a wolf hound bit him in his head. He was completely out of it and eventually pulled through minus the eye! I hope he gets better.

Well togster in the other thread in relation to the Canadian seal hunters killed, you wanted to know what kind of things happen in peoples lives who have no sympathy for 5 people dying. Well this is the type of **** that makes me feel this way! Here you have some prick with a car under his fat ass who runs over a dog and couldn't be arsed to stop. Imagine it was a child!

You say i should be locked up! This **** should be locked up and put off the road!

I hope to god your little fella pulls through Lisaloo.

I hope your dog pulls through, OP! The person who knocked him down should be ashamed of themselves and I hope they feel guilty for the rest of their life!
Your doggie is a beaut and I hope he pulls through!! You and your poor dog will be in my thoughts!!

OP, we (Limerick Animal Welfare) treated a little collie x last summer that had been in a RTA. She too had eye damage and some swelling in her brain, her balance was completely off and she was very shocked and stunned. She lost the sight in the eye sadly, but with time and patience she did come around and went to a wonderful new home in England. It took six to eight weeks before she recovered, but recover she did. I am sure there is every good chance for a good outcome for your lovely goldie, and I send healing thoughts to you both. Goldies are notorious ramblers who love taking themselves off exploring if given half a chance - I'm sorry your fella is the worse for it. It sounds like you took every precaution to prevent something like this happening, so don't be too hard on yourself.

thanks everyone, you are all really nice. Rosco is doing well. i brought him home yesterday. He can walk on 1 leg and looks like he will loose his eye. he's in really bad pain at the moment. hard panting and little cries. he's been sleeping alot but is eating and drinking and going to the toilet so thats good. i think we may have to bring him to an eye specialist.

the Vet did a great job though and we are grateful for that. its very strange, looking at him now and he's so lifeless. hope he's back to himself shortly.

Dogs are hardy and resilient creatures, its a good sign for him that he's got this far.

    Best of luck :)
