Courtlough shooting grounds near Balbriggan, Liam would be the guy to talk to in there. And there's a chap in Lucan as well I believe. Never dealt with him or been in his shop but there's surely someone in here who has.

Neil McVeigh is a sound bloke. Would recommend him for any dealings.

    Tallagh rod and gun
I do most of my dealing with Pat Clinton in Lucan, not the tidiest of shops but a top bloke and a wicked gunsmith

Chap in the Tallaght Rod and Gun, whose name escapes me, is also a genuinely nice guy to deal with.

will thats the 3 of the 4 i know covered. But the other one wont deal with you if you are not with someone who's already a customer.

Courthlough will let you into there gun room (you can drool to your heaths content over the guns) mostly shotguns and a good selection of .22 the odd air rifle and the last time I was there 1 .17HMR.

Monkstown, good prices and a very nice to deal with, but they make trips to and from gun room for you. So you can't just see it and fall in love.

Rod and gun, have only talked to them on the phone, prices were a bit high for my liking but maybe they come down a bit with the haggle. Don't think they will let you in there gun room.

I have to ask, why is it so important for you to go in to the gun room??
Its like going into a sweet shop, you can never make up youre mind what to get. If you tell the guy in the shop of you're choice what you are looking for from a gun and how much you have to spend he will be better able to tell you and show you his selection that fits in you're brackets. anyone who wanders into a gunshop "for a look" is wasting the shops time and they all know it too well.

And when you buy food in super value its much better to ask the girl at the till to get the stuff for you too

Some of the best times I have had were getting a chance to spend serious time in the lock up handling guns and getting a feel for what you'd like when you have the money.

Iam amazed at how different the attitudes are in gun sellers here and in the EU and the US is. The "for a look " customer in Ireland is considerd a waste of time and a nusiance. In Germany and the USA they are considerd a potential sale!!!
Iwas in Hamburg last Fri and went to a gunshop there .The guy behind the counter was so friendly,I ended up spending five hours there talking guns with him..Despite this he was able to serve 3 other customers answer the phone a half dozen times, and hand me out three different semi auto rifles to compare by myself on the counter, while dealing in a banter fashion with a guy buying a 5k hunting rifle. Then another hour comparing handguns.I bought three gun mags[the reading kind] total 15 euro, and gave him a possible comittment on either two of the rifles a SIG 550, or a ruger mini14.Both at 2k and 700 euros respectively.I hadnt any intention of buying a gun , and wether I can get a liscense here Iwas just looking ..... BUT the point is;They have a potential sale....

Here,it is usually a job to get into the bank vault of the gun room.Usually by yourself or left in charge of "wha?" You know the kind, the most junior fellow in the shop, who hasnt a clue about guns, because the man who does, is running about having to serve somone else,or answering the phone or whatnot. If you ask your escort aquestion..you usualy get a "wha?" for an answer. I've walked away from three potential sales here in Ireland ,because of sales staff attitudes. The worst was in a shop that shall remain nameless. The attitude and statement was "Yeah, its a gun..Are you buying it now??".The other two were oh the boss isnt in he will be back tomrrow, despite me booking ringing in ahead to see if they were there, and driving over 50 miles one way.

Dont treat your just looking customers as any worse. They might actually FIND somthing you have been trying to shift for ages... You dont buy guns from a catolouge, without trying to get to see, feel and handle them as much as possible.Nor can you sell them by taking one out and returning with the other from the vault.

The german and US dealers do have an advantage though Grizzly - firstly, Irish shooters... well, I wouldn't want to offend by saying they're skinflints, but they are very proactive in seeking out optimum value for money. Secondly, there's a far smaller market over here.

That said, some do take it way too far...

That may be your expierence Grizzley, but it certianly isn't mine.
I've dealt with two of the above mentioned shops. Lucan fishing and shooting (P. Clinton) and Courtlough.
My family have been dealing with the lucan store for a long time, i haven't bought anything personally (besides ammo), but he was a great help sourcing the clay trap we wanted.
When I was buying a gun I went out to courtlough, emailed ahead and Liam got back to me the next day. I went out and he went through a few with me, tried them for fit etc, there was no proble with having a look, i was pretty sure on which one i wanted and Liam said well don't buy it unless you are sure, come back up during the week and try it out.
So I return during the week, and he gjves me a box of shells to run through it, fits perfect, deposit down, thank you sir

well said grizzly, during trips to the US I have walked int o gunshops and introduced myself as a browsing customer..they then proceeded to hand me down everything thery thought i should see even though they knew i wouldnt be making a gun purchase...i would always leave however with the veritable bag of unobtainable in ireland goodies:D

Pat Clinton is on the old Lucan Road not far from Woodies. Not a bad little shop. Seems to do mostly fishing tackle although Pat himself is apparently one of the few actual gunsmiths in Ireland.

Regarding attitudes to shop owners in Ireland. Mate of mine was in a certain gunroom (which shall remain nameless) and was told not to take a gun off the rack because the grease on his hands would dirty the barrells.
Needless to say he went elswhere to spend his €1500.

Glad to hear you had such good experiances with the two shops you mentioned Mellor.
Because I wasnt referring to them at all.....!!!! Never been to either of them in my life.So I wouldn't comment on them.
These places I refer to are down South ways.
One of them now out of busisness[I wonder why.....??]

True indeed Sparks, and nothing wrong with looking for a better deal. But then if the seller is making it a more unpleasent experiance...can the seller be surprised if he hasn't got a sale???

When I was looking for a Shotgun the budget I had to start with was only half what I paid for my gun in the end.

If I was handed guns over the counter to try I would not have looked at guns in that price range, But because I got into the gun room and picked up the guns to try for fit and feel. I came across some dearer guns that I was willing to pay the extra for.

As a result that gun dealer got a sale worth double what the over the counter dealer would have got.

Yeah, he's a real gent. I'm probably going to give him my business on a shotgun as well.
