New Boiler - 1/3 as Efficient?

Strange problem. We changed boilers recently & also from diesel to kerosene.

New setup is a Grant boiler with a Bentone burner & a Siemens control panel.

    1) Previously 1,000 litres of Diesel lasted 6 months
    2) Now with the new setup, 1,000 litres of Kerosene have lasted only 2 months.
    3) Heating temperature is set to 60 degrees.
    4) The house has 1 average sized radiator running 14 hours/day with avg heat.
    5) The boilerhouse is also a LOT hotter now than it was - indicating heat might be escaping somehow?

    The Question:
What could be causing the boiler to use in 2 months what it previously used in 6 months?

Is there some type of "choke" on the boiler that might not be set correctly?

What else could be the issue?

    Many thanks in advance.
    J

I install gas boilers myself ,but by the sounds of it ,your boiler is too big for what you need.

OK but its a 5 bed house so possibly not that? (Even though we haven't had very much heat on recently)

    Thanks for your response.

Regardless of the amount of radiators on ,14hours is a long time to have a boiler on.
Are you saying that you just have one radiator turned on permanently for 14 hours ,or that you have your heating on normally with one rad on for additional time??

Any heatloss is costing you money .

It would be useful to know what changed from to in terms of boiler capacity ie btu output of old and new etc: possible that the nozzle is 2 big.

Also if it is 2 big it will be cycling a lot hence more inefficient
    see http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/intermittent-boiler-efficieny-d_1133.html

likewise diesel has a higher energy content that kero

Depending on how old the original boiler was, the Grant should be saving you about 1/3rd of your oil. not the other way. Is there anything else different in the system, other than the boilers ? Has the new boiler been set up properly ?
Do you see smoke when it's running. Take the top cover off the boiler (depending on which model - probably just 2 nuts). It should be quite clean on the inside surface - if there is any coating of soot, there is a problem.
Apart from that, it's very difficult to diagnose from a distance.
    Jim.
