Basically as the title says i've a budget of around 14-15k to buy a second hand Diesel car. I need diesel because i recently moved job and will be doing about 32k miles a year.

I was looking at Octavia, Avensis, Golf, Mazda 6.

    can anyone give any advise/comments/recommendations?

I was in you shoes last year, this is what I bought from Motorpoint in the UK.

    http://www.motorpoint.co.uk/(S(vfymyxikxgtvcs45nlga1hzv))/Search/VehicleDetails.aspx?vehicle=177917&diesel=yes

You will need around 18K, but you will get a low mileage, nearly new car with a 2 year warranty remaining. It looks great and has a huge interior. 6 speed gearbox means its very quite at speed. You will also get one of the best diesels on the market. I think it is a super car and despite the Renault bashing has proved more reliable than our previous Golf.

6 diesels are a no no. Just ask galwaytt, and what happened to him is pretty common with those diesels apparently.

    I'd say Avensis.

I disagree with this. They're no less reliable than most other engines out there, and if you look, you'll find 20 reliable stories for every 1 unreliable story.

Thanks for all the replies so far.
I really cant stretch further than 15k
12/13k is my comfort zone but i'm finding it hard to get a good diesel with lowish milege for that price

Check autotrader.co.uk for a 2004 Diesel Accord. Looking at them myself for July and they should come in bout your price range. Before July Probably a bit more(€2000) They come with a much higher spec than the irish ones though (sat nav and all that jazz). Great car to drive aswell and very reliable. Yes/No

I love the Honda accord but didnt think i'd get a Diesel one for 15k..i'll definitely look into getting one in UK. i can wait till July aswell if it means saving money on the new VRT rules

You should buy an Avensis..... ig you're a soul-less sheep:D

With the mileage you're doing and the fact thta diesel cars are about to become much more affordable, you will lose your shirt on depreciation spending that much on a diesel car.

If I were in your position, I'd buy something like this.

    http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Volkswagen/Passat/car/985113/ or

http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/SEAT/Toledo/1.9-tdi/991982/ (VERY suspicious mileage, thouhh) or

    http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Ford/Mondeo/2.0-TD/979944/

I'd also consider getting a low mileage budget petrol car like this http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Mazda/626/1.8-COMFORT/960082/ 12000 miles and €10k+ in your pocket will buy a lot of petrol- I call this true economy. You can put your cruel mileage onto this yoke and not worry about reliability and depreciation.

...or buy a car-van like a focus, if it's simply to get yer arse to work and the Mazda for bumming around at home/ family etc. Car-killing mileage is your biggest worry IMO.

Actually most of the UK ones came in lower spec than the Irish ones. The Irish diesel Accords came only in Executive trim, which is the highest. They changed that I think last year, but in UK they came in both Sport and Executive. Sat Nav is about the only extra you'd get over there. Also, while they're a good suggestion, they're not a price that fits the OP's budget.

I'd say the seat is a dodgy one (could be wrong) thats not the 130 bhp engine layout. That spec should be 110 bhp with funny low milage too.
But I agree with your later post which you suggest the car-van.
    +1
Get a diesl car-van for high miles and a nice second car (petrol) for home use. That's if your job allows.
If your a sales person, and require diesel econonmy and comfort + safty, hard to beat a Passat. (stay away from 6-speed box!!)
Passats and Mondeos are tried and tested.

Im actually in same situation as OP and billgoatgruff, and I am waiting til July to see what happens with 2.2ctdi accords. A mate of mine has one and they are a lot of car for the money, im hoping to pick one up for about 16/17k post july, I would love to hear what people think about the prices of diesel accords after july and whether or not its better to buy in Ireland or UK.

True Biro. They did only come in the Exec in ireland until recently when they brought in the type s diesel. My mistake. But you do get the sat nav in a lot of the UK spec exec diesel accords which, i think, is a pretty big extra. In relation to the budget that the OP has, you could pick up a nice diesel accord after July for not to far off it.

Would definelty wait until after july to buy a accord with the vrt implications as the VRT on a 2004 will drop by about €2200. And if the euro remains as stong as it is now against the pound you will be quids in.

good point about the high euro rate i hadnt really factored that in...hopefully it continues till july
