Whats the story with them kicking everyone out to close up so early?
Ok im sure they want to go home but can they not leave them open later than half six?
Its really annoying if your trying to get something done and your booted out at half six, I remember it used to be about half seven or eight that they closed up.
Even thats very early when the library remains open until eleven. Or even if they just extended the opening times during exam periods, but no.
Anyone else annoyed by this or just me?

This used to annoy the crap out of me. At least when I go back I'll be in 4th year and have my swipe card...

I'm on a year out, I was in 3rd year last year. Posting because I'm bored out of my ****ing skull in work.

Hahaha I heard that exact one this morning in the second year lab! :P

They charge €40 deposit to get one of the swipe cards, which is a pain. Still though, I've made it this far into 4th year without having to buckle and pay out.
I agree that it's pretty much insane how early they close the 3rd and lower labs. I'm pretty sure the official word is "security", which is a lousy excuse. There are plenty of cameras, and no other school seems to be at such risk... if you really wanted to, you could easily smash through the glass door if you were stealing stuff
The computers have specialised software installed that you can't access in the other computer rooms on campus. Because of this crap, you really need your own laptop/computer at this stage.

So what your saying is UCD should give us all free laptops.
I like your train of thought... :P

Laptops as standard for all CompSci students as of the 08/09 academic year. They're doing a Quinn School on it.

Yeah I got the email about that. Wonder how they plan to enforce it... I guess this means you can't rely on the machines in the building anymore, not that you can really rely on them now.

If you're in 4th year, presumably you remember the spate of thefts there about a year ago? Half the plasma screens in Science got robbed along with a load of PCs out of labs and offices... Cameras are useful, but they don't prevent theft per se.

I heard about this email but didn't get it. Infact, no one I know in second year got it.
It's a stupid policy imo. My pc at home is where I do all my work, can't stand the lab machines. Why should I have to get a lap top if I don't need one?

I reckon come next year they're going to get rid of the majority of PCs in the labs so they won't have the whole "security" excuse to keep closing the labs early. Mind you, us 3rd years have swipe cards now so not really an issue for us anymore :D

I know third year is more important than second year but it would still be nice if we in second year could actually stay late and get some work done..
Even if they extended the issue of swipe cards to all comp sci students.
Its not like all seconds and thrid years are thieves... :p

Well to be honset, the amount of Computers with missing keyboards and mice is ridiculous... also people seem to abuse the lab machines.. Hence the move to laptops and presumably the need to close..

I agree with you about the missing mice and keyboards. But people are just as likely to do it during the day as at night. Infact this is when they must be being taken as its the only time non Comp Sci students have access to the labs... And if it was only comp sci students who had access to the labs I dont think we'd have that problem...
