Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

New sword ban in UK

So I've heard of this new ban on "Samurai" swords starting in the UK next week.
The ban only applies to "curved blades, sharpened on one side", does anyone else think this ban just takes the p155 out of both sides of the argument for and against swords by banning only one style?
Are legislators really that stupid?
Is the UK turning into an ultra-nanny state?

Sorry, what?
Have there been many sword-related deaths/murders in the UK??

I only heard about it today, they must have kept it quiet since the toy gun ban.

The Jedi are, understandably, upset by this proposed ban.......

They shouldn't worry, light sabers don't have curved single sided blade and are hence unaffected by the ban :pac:

The UK's Home Office today issued a consultation paper ahead of legislation intended to ban Samurai blades by the end of the year. In a bid to "protect the public", replica Samurai swords will become illegal to import, sell and hire in Britain.

Excuse me? Who's hiring samurai swords??

Absolute bollox.

Of course a double edged claymore braveheart type sword is harmless by comparison.

I demand to know what exactly was going on that they felt such a ban was required??!

From what I've read after a quick google, I believe this ban was announced a year ago and was scheduled to come into force in April of this year.

Events involving swords must have been high back then.

I don't have any need/want for a Samurai sword, couldn't give a fcuk if they banned them tbh. Don't see why anyone would care.

Glasgow.

Swords ban to beat violent crime
The measures are the latest steps from the Scottish Executive to curb the problem of knife crime.

They come weeks after a nationwide knife amnesty.

A total of 12,645 blades - including lock knives, machetes, swords, meat cleavers, bayonets and axes - were handed in during the five-week amnesty.

I wonder if theres any point, aren't most of the stabbings done with kitchen knives, stanley blades and screwdrivers?

I seem to remember a call to ban baseball bats a while back (in this country) as nobody really buys them to play baseball.

Samurai who've just come into the country and had their swords confiscated by customs. Obviously!

This measure is sure to stop criminals using knives and swords in crime, well done.

I'm guessing that this means all samurai sword replicas being sold in the north currently will be sold off at a bargain price to clear stock before the ban? Must take a trip to Derry.

I think its a bit stupid alrite. Although it does seem that they are becoming the weapon of choice :(
I watch a lot of shows like "Road wars" and such and you do notice that a lot of criminals carry swords. One episode showed a traffic cop being attacked by a scumbag with one.

I have a quite a weapon collection, much of which consists of swords. They did start to seem a bit boring when loads of people started buying them :o. No doubt the same ban will come here.

Completely stupid policy.

Like banning Vodka/Dutch Gold because it's the tipple of choice for the ASBO crowd. They'll just move on to something else.

just get straight blades or blades sharpened on both sides...

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85,189 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

The paper notes that genuine Samurai swords would not attract the same penalties, and there are also exemptions for other specific martial arts weapons. "We recognise it is the cheap, easily available Samurai swords which are being used in crime and not the genuine, more expensive samurai swords which are of interest to collectors and martial art enthusiasts," Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker. "As such as we are putting forward exemptions for these groups."

The Jedi have nothing to worry about really.

Or they'll just return to the 8-inch cleaver that you get with every kitchen knife set. Easier to hide and easier to use.

I imagine carrying swords is something that Joe scumbag sees as a badge of honour (of sorts). Like carrying a gun, except its very visible and makes them feel like they're in a movie. Don't forget that these people are idiots.

I imagine it'll still be possible to legally get your hands on one in the UK, you'll just have a few more hopps to jump through.

I've heard it described as an "Idonlikedalookadat" law.

Those of us who shoot rifles are well familiar with laws banning certain firearms purely on aesthetic grounds. We've been fighting them for years, but it's amazing how many people will think that one thing is more dangerous than an other simply because it's shaped differently. It's mainly to do with ignorance. Most people are familiar enough with cars to know that putting a spoiler on the back, lowering the suspension, and putting on a louder exhaust will not, in fact, make the car any faster or more likely to break laws. Less is known about swords, and even less about guns. Instead, if it 'looks scary' it must be bad!

Its a shame that legitimate uses of swords will be curtailed. Um...

Still, whats the point. Its like the stupid airport rule banning liquids over 100ml. Those pesky terrorists would never dream of something like the 99ml liquid bomb surely.

Well, if we're quoting sword scripture...

Luke 22:36
Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

Am i the only one that figures that this ban is pointless, it's like the handgun ban there trying to bring in here.
The people out stabbing and shooting people aren't the one's who legally obtain them
