James Holden - "The Idiots Are Winning"
It's been out about 2 years but I only picked it up a few months ago and I can't put it down.
Also try Nathan Fake's "Drowning in a Sea of Love", it's older again, more chilled but still some good stuff from the boys at Border Community.
I really hope they play Dublin some time in the near future, I missed Holden's gig in Belfast in March and there don't seem to be any listings for Ireland on their site or myspaces :(

Great idea for a thread Johnny.

My favourite album of late is:

    Gui Boratto - Chromophobia
    chromophobia.jpg
Sao Paulo's Gui Boratto has become one of the hottest names in minimal house over the past two years, thanks to a stream of singles that have become ubiquitous in clubs across Europe. His debut full-length album doesn't disappoint. Boratto embodies many of the innovative qualities that the Cologne label Kompakt has introduced to dance music this decade, principally a lush, emotional approach to minimalism.

Texturally sumptuous minor-key synths, pitched exactly between euphoria and melancholy, provide the foundations for Chromophobia. Around them, Boratto builds tracks using a varied sonic palette, from the grinding electro grooves and brutalist bass of Terminal to the hands-in-the-air pop rush of Beautiful Life, a dancefloor anthem-in-waiting on which Boratto's wife, Luciana, essays a fantastic vocal performance. The twinkling high-end of Shebang is addictive, while Xilo, all moody riffs and sweeping synths, shows Depeche Mode's influence

    Yeah sound Zascar mate.

Felix that's an amazing album i have it in my external hard drive which is still out of action, top notch.

Chromophobia is an amazing album alright Zascar. Id recommend picking up any of his stuff that isnt on the album either. The Rivington EP is worth a listen.

Also agree with Orizio on Bengas Diary of an Afro Warrior. Its the best slice of dubstep ive heard to date.

Stick either of those albums on a pair of headphones and it makes the day that much easier.

My own contribution is going to Walls by Apparat. Really good stuff. Pitchfork put it best when they said

"one of the best electronic dream-pop records in a while, somewhere in the tradition of M83, Slowdive, Junior Boys, Schneider TM, and every other act to trip out on dense, blissy echoes and thinky, under-the-covers slowness-- not the kind of album that asks for your attention, but the kind that seduces you into it."

Have to say on the Gui Boratto album I loved it on the first few listens but it has started to bore me now somewhat. It is good, but will most likely gather dust with the odd listen now and again. IMO :pac:

When I first listened to Chromophobia I really liked a few tunes but not so keen on others - some were a little too chilled for my taste. However I have a live set of his and he mixes loads of the tracks from his album, and some others into a stonkin mix - was so impressed how he managed to blend it all in so well. After a few listens the album totally grew on me as very special. It's called "Gui Boratto - Live @ DJ Broadcast Livecast (04-06-2007)" you'll find it online.

Lads, when recommending an album, can we all try to put in some extra detail? It really helps the thread. Full title, a pic of the cover is always nice, a description of what it's like, and some links if appropriate... cheers

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,322 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

Must check out that mix. I don't know what it is about the Chromophobia album but I did love it on the first few listens but just got tired of it, quicker than I normally would a new album. I'm sure I will go back to it at some stage.

Johnny, that Alumbra album is excellent, thanks so much for the recommendation. I've been so engrossed in Electro, Minimal and Techno that I really have barely listened to any 'normal' house music in ages - CD2 really brings back a lot of great memories from a few years ago, Vazilendo, Zookey, Bakari Ban - what savage tunes...

    Keep em comin!

Think I posted this in another thread before, but worth a mention again:

Cocorico 2 (Mixed by Marc Romboy)
    Cocorico02MTR2322D.jpg
Italy's Cocorico club heats up the summer with a compilation mixed by Systematic chief of electrohouse Marc Romboy.

Romboy hooked up with studio whiz Stephan Bodzin on a string of big singles and a longplayer in 2006, but these days he's getting out about in the clubs. 'Cocorico '02' is an all-out club mix that captures the venue's ravey atmosphere with current big twelves from Samuel L. Session ('Can You Relate?') and Shlomi Aber ('Freakside') as well as the latest Bodzin vs Romboy effort ('Callisto'), Romboy's new solo outing 'Sunburst' and Robert Babicz's 'Sin' from Romboy's Systematic stable.

I just stuck this in the other thread for best albums but it should be here too given that it has been deleted now for a long time but recently remastered, great opportunity for anyone who missed it before to now buy it. Fantastic album :pac:

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works

    saw.jpg

    1 Xtal (4:51)
    2 Tha (9:01)
    3 Pulsewidth (3:47)

    6 Green Calx (6:02)
    7 Heliosphan (4:51)
8 We Are The Music Makers (7:42)
    9 Schottkey 7th Path (5:07)
    10 Ptolemy (7:12)
    11 Hedphelym (6:02)
    12 Delphium (5:36)
    13 Actium (7:35)

    http://www.discogs.com/release/1303737

What can you say really about this album except for if you don't already own a copy, you really need to go buy it. Absolutely amazing and in my case what started my passion for electronic music back when I bought it originally in about 93 or so. I plan to also buy this new remastered version as my copy is a bit old looking now!
*DIGITALLY REMASTERED AND REISSUED AFTER BEING UNAVAILABLE FOR YEARS!* My oh my...this doesn't really need any introduction at all now does it???? Well, what we have here is a brand new REMASTERED edition of one of the most influential electronic albums of all time, and surely STILL the most instantly recognisable and affecting album from Richard D James. Truly marvelous, put a smile on your face and give this album another whirl...

    One more quickly....

If you like your Electrohouse, check out the "Sneakerz" series. They are a dutch record label that have had a few good releases now. I first heard Number 2 and thought it was brilliant! Number 1 is quite good too. Bit old maybe but worth a mention.

That Network box set looks like good value. Been enjoying Sessions a lot lately too.

    Donnacha Costello - Colorseries

    01 - Orange A (06:04)
    02 - Grape A (05:59)
    03 - Pistachio A (08:02)
    04 - Grape B (09:13)
    05 - Opal Sessions Unreleased (07:34)

    08 - Cocoa B (10:02)
    09 - Cocoa Sessions Unreleased (07:09)
    10 - Mustard B (06:12)

Great slab of dubby analogue techno. Has a very early nineties feel to it, immediately brought SAW1 to mind. Highly recommended. Apparently not a patch on the Vinyl series, which I'm highly tempted to hunt down despite not owning a record player. Have a look for one of the B-sides too, 'Black Bag Job 737.'

'Classics' was originally released in 1993 via the legendary R+S imprint and was the first record to compile the early solo work of Juan Atkins post Cybotron, including the legendary cuts from 'No UFO's', 'Off to Battle', 'Night drive' and 'Electronic' through to 'Ocean to Ocean' in instrumental form and 'techno music', basically exactly the same as the original CD issue in case you were wondering. There's not a lot more we need to tell you about this record, it's just Detroit Gold, emotive, dance rocking and over all, amazing. Well recommended.

Some info in case anyone doesn't know Model 500 (Juan Atkins)
    http://www.discogs.com/artist/Juan+Atkins

    Real Name: Juan Atkins
    Date Of Birth: 12.9.62.
Education: Belleville High School, Washentaw Community College, Recording Institute Of Detroit.

    leg·end (ljnd):

1a. An unverified story handed down from earlier times, especially one believed to be historical.
1b. A body or collection of such stories.
    2. One that inspires legends or achieves legendary fame.

Juan Atkins truly is a legend in his own time. Appearing behind aliases such as Cybotron, Model 500 and Infiniti, he has released many classics of sublime Detroit techno, including the 1982 electro track "Clear". Recorded by Atkins and Rick Davis as Cybotron, this track is often considered the first proto-techno track. Experimenting with fusing the extra-terrestrial funk of Parliament Funkadelic with the futuristic rhythms and hard math of Kraftwerk and the progressive dance theorems proposed by Giorgio Moroder, the Model 500 12"s laid the blueprint for Detroit Techno. Along with the tracks made by two schoolmates from the grade below, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, Detroit Techno quickly made its way across the Atlantic and immediately sparked the emerging rave culture and soon after the entire global dance community. Moving through the later 80's as Model 500, Atkins continued as one of the most prolific and sought after producers of electronic music throughout the 90's, culminating in the use of an Atkins' original as the musical bed for the 2000 launch of the Ford Focus 'Detroit Techno' automobile. Juan joins Moby on the Area One tour, and then takes the road on a stateside Om Record's tour this summer.
Packing clubs from Detroit to NY to Venezuela, Juan has mastered the art of soaking up new rhythmic elements from contemporary dance music while keeping his unerring, instantly recognizable sense of melody intact. Much discussed and anthologized not only for his 20 years of production credit but also for his ability to rock a dance floor, Juan Atkins' music and DJing is deified in Europe and embraced all over the world. Juan has also been prolifically releasing albums, remixes and collaborations on Belgium's R & S Records, Germany's Tresor, and others. His six full-length releases are available only as imports.

Thanks for that link, good read alright - interesting how some ignored them for sponsorship. Sign of the times I suppose.

Below quote in reference to the vinyl release which is 10 tracks rather than 13 on the CD.
Arne Weinberg's AW-Recordings does the business here, compiling a heavyweight 10 track package featuring cuts from the cream of Nu-Detroit and dub techno producers. Louis Haiman steps to the plate with a swirling electro cut swathed in fathoms deep synth pads, CRC archon is a well studied slice of Detroit techno soul while Alex Leon takes it out there with a beatless darkside spectral composition. Stephen Brown of Transmat pedigree provides one of the album's highlights on 'light rain' with a bright and uplifting 313 jacker, before Convextion appears under his Time light Curve alias. From the opening synth wash it's immediately apparent that we're in the presence of a Gerard Hansen production with his synth driven style of emotional punishment, if you've caught any of his live shows in the last year or so you'll recognise it from the off. The quality doesn't drop from here though, the second disc packs in fresh cuts from the legendary Strand, Ovatow with an awesome dub chord stabs meets electro mutation while XDB chucks in a sweltering club killer. Obsolete Music Technology and Derek Carr fillin the final side with a couplet of sweetened Detroit techno soul, leaving you in exactly the place you want to be.

If you have interrupted sleep patterns because of the infrequency of Transmat releases, this this album may be your tonic. Released on Arne Weinberg's cryptically named AW Recordings, 'Viewpoints' takes the classic Detroit techno blueprint, and is fashioned by a selection the current producers respectfully 'exploiting' that sound. Contributions come from the the relatively unknown (check the B12 style techno of CRC's 'Archon'!) to the familiar (Transmat's Stephen Brown and Detroit veterens, Strand AKA Kech & Bonds). Recommended.

This first compilation on Arne Weinberg’s label is a wonderful introduction to overlooked artists crafting techno in the Detroit style. San Diego’s Louis Haiman kicks off the collection with a real mind-bender. Synth squelches and clattering beats pan so expertly they seem to move up and down through the listening space. I’m not surprised to see Haiman on a Transmat compilation from 1999, according to Discogs. CRC’s “Archon” builds slowly, but the batty synths at the end remind me of Fade to Black’s “The Calling.” Think 1990. Stephen Brown, another Transmat favorite, contributes “Light Rain,” with tasty analogue synth tones over a heavy kickdrum.

Next up is “Multipole Vector” by Time Light Curve, a new Convextion alias. Dry snares provide a grid which is gradually filled with warm bass synths, glitchy squawks, and ghostly voices. A bittersweet tune ties everything together. Myon’s “Odyssey Red” is cinematic, with seven minutes of sad, sweeping melody over old-school beats. “Soleil” by Detroit’s Strand makes exceptional use of piano over crisp percussion and complex bleeps.

Moving inevitably into dub techno territory, Ovatow’s “Visitation V4” pulls together odd sounds which never truly gel. I can’t decide if it’s missing pieces or just strangely mastered. East Island’s “The Master of Servir” is more successful, with unique tones dreamily circling lo-fi beats. “C.O.N.” by XDB is the best of the bunch, infusing a driving tempo with dub depths. Cascading reverb speeds about like lightning in some mad scientist’s lab. Back to more traditional Detroit techno, another favorite is Obsolete Music Technology’s “Evening Star.” From its opening chords, it pulls me into a warm, beautiful place. Every single tone is a pleasure to hear.

This compilation proves old production techniques can still result in beautiful tracks. None of these cuts would seem out of place on a compilation of early nineties techno. These artists remind me of a time when technology seemed exciting and empowering instead of just overwhelming.

Not new, but recently reissued and pretty hard to find until now -

A Guy Called Gerald - Black Secret Technology

    Tracklisting:

    1 So Many Dreams (6:45)
    2 Alita's Dream (5:00)
    3 Finley's Rainbow (Slow Motion Mix) (5:30)
    4 The Nile (4:14)
    5 Energy (Extended Mix) (6:12)
    6 Silent Cry (Gerico) (5:42)
    7 Dreaming Of You (6:12)
    8 Survival (5:44)
    9 Cybergen (4:32)
    10 The Reno (5:18)
    11 Cyberjazz (4:52)
    12 Voodoo Rage (6:02)
13 Life Unfolds His Mystery (5:21)
14 End Of The Tunnel (6:33)
Where to start with this album? Firstly, I should say that it ranks in my personal top 10 albums of all time and never fails to absolutely destroy me. Secondly - the abysmal sound quality of the original 1995 issue has now at long last been replaced by this brilliant new master - finally doing justice to the material and playable at loudest volumes imaginable - which we heartily encourage! 'Black Secret Technology' came out just before Goldie's 'Timeless' and was soon overshadowed by its commercial success, but Gerald's album remains a milestone in British electronic music and somehow sounds more relevant today than pretty much any Jungle/Drum & Bass album we can think of. Gerald brought together elements of Hardcore and Jungle with a melodic, evocative sound layering that could best be described as appropriating the chords and strings of Detroit techno. The resulting sound is both luxurious and oppressive, despite the harmonies it's a much less polished piece of work than Goldie's "timeless' and is somehow defined by that sonic dichotomy. The opening 'So Many Dreams' is both emotionally overwhelming and relentlessly cavernous - even the widescreen strings are squashed by brilliantly unstable production, the drums layered and impossibly intricate, the bassline nothing short of heartstopping. 'Energy' (interestingly co-produced with Goldie) is another indefinable piece of engineering, samples and vocals submerged by wonky synths and amazingly clever arrangements that leave you emotionally drained yet exhilarated. But it's tracks like 'Cybergen' that no one quite seemed to understand back in '95 that really leave you awestruck by this amazing album. It's a fierce, almost deranged alignment of grinding hoover noises and stripped drums in a proto 2-step formation that will absolutely destroy you when played loud - hard to overstate just how righteous it is. If you don't already own this landmark album - what the f*ck you waiting for???? Utterly Essential for all bass, drums and next-level fiends = every home should own a copy.
