    Hi,
Our amateur dramatic society is determined to put together a brand spanking new stage.
Unfortunately we dont have the knowledge to go about it.
We definitely have the enthuaism though.

I was wondering if any of you kind folk would be able to advise us on how to go about it? Maybe a web site with some plans and drawings?
We have no problem getting our hands dirty and getting out the handsaw, but we do need some direction.

What we are hoping for is :
    - a movable 'light & sturdy' stage
    - 2 side walls, and a rear wall, all on hinges so that the stage can be reversed
    - a door and a window in the rear wall
    - a door on one of the sidewalls
    - a fire place on the other sidewall
    - stands so that the stage can be erected anywhere quickly-ish

Id be hoping that 2 sheets of 8'x4' mdf would do one side wall, and 4 sheets of 8'x4' would do the rear wall. Then some hinges, door, windows, and paint?

    So any help appreciated. :)
    Thanks
    John

On a related note, does anyone know of a grants scheme available to dramatic society's?
We have some money in the kitty after our last play, but we're hoping to expand 'dramatically'.
    lol sorry:)

I am presuming you mean "set" rather than stage. MDF is not a good idea. Besides being made of nasty stuff it will end up too heavy. Check "theatre flat construction" on the net. There are loads of links which will show you exactly what to do, and it is all managable with just enthusiasm, but there are a few tricks which are time-tested. Traditionally flats were made by stretching muslin across a wooden frame and then the scenic artist painted it, but nowadays most flats are covered with sheets of ply and just wallpapered or painted. Windows, doors and fireplaces are built into the frame. Otherwise, they will come apart during the show. All the flats are stood by using braces. What do you mean by "reverse"? Will the set have to be turned during a show? A lot of it depends on what exactly you want the set to do for you. Good luck with it. Sorry I can't help with the funding. Try Drama League of Ireland. They should know.

Grants are available from the Arts offices of county councils but depending on budget, show, venue, cast size, venue and a whole load of other factors it could be anything from €50 to €5,000.

Contact your local arts office for more info
