Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Got this from the Newcastle Chronicle forum, but I think it would work well.

Basically, state your team, and then make a confession. The idea is to confess an admission of fault - no slagging off others. Simply, I was wrong (be it a manager, player, signing, league position, whatever) and off the mark.

    I'll get the ball rolling, Club I support: Newcastle;

    - I thought Big Sam was the man to get us playing better and up the table.

    - I thought Duffer would have set the Toon alight by now.

    - I also had high hopes for Stephane Guivarch (can never fooking spell it).

    - I thought King Kenny was going to finish off what King Kev had started.

    - I had high hopes for Bramble given his reputation at Ipswich.

    - I though we'd gotten away with Murder getting Bowyer on a bargain.

    Manchester United

    - I wished Ronaldo would never take a free kick again.

    - I still love Paul Ince

    - I turned off the TV @ 88mins in the champions league final of 99'

I support Man United. Its been 2 months since my last confession, these are my sins:

    - I thought Kleberson would be immense.

    - I called for United to sell Ronaldo after 'that' Benfica game.

    - I thought and still do think that Diego Forlan was a very good player for us.

    - I never liked Jaap Stam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,048 ✭✭✭Unearthly

    For Man Utd

    - I keep thinking we'll win the CL every year

    - I was of the opinion that Ronaldo wouldn't improve much after his 2nd season.

    - I thought selling Van Nistelrooy would destroy the club

    - I thought Djemba Djemba was going to be a star :D

    Arsenal

I was delighted when we finally got Julio 'The Beast' Baptista on loan (though in fairness, he's looked good back in La Liga this season)

And Chris Kiwomya seemed a mildly exciting signing back in the day...

    For Arsenal
    • I thought Jeffers would give Arsenal that extra edge to put away the chances we create
    • After Pennant's goal in an end of season game against Middlesborough ?? I thought that he would come good the following season
    • Ditto for Bentley. (in fairness he's doing well now)
    • Thought it was a stupid decision to sell Upson.
    • Reckoned that Cygan was a decent defender for us in Europe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,815 ✭✭✭Charlie

A number of you make admissions, but then qualify by saying 'still think he's good though' or he's improved elsewhere. Thats not the game ya big cheaters :D

If you're wrong, you're wrong. End of.

    He was.

And it was. Not because he has turned out well (he wasn't and never will be good enough for the Arsenal first team, which is what he wanted), but because we lost the title that season because of CB injuries.

I have no confessions to make, I am perfect in my judgements.

    Well, okay then.

    - I thought Reyes was going to be a world-beater. We're talking Messi, Ronaldo world-beater. I failed to factor in his lack of a brain.
    - I really thought Arsenal would beat Barcelona, which is rare for me, because I generally expect the worst.
    - I too was very pleased with the arrival of Baptista. In my defence, I was factoring in it only being a loan...
    - I thought Quincy Owusu-Abeyie would be a star.
    - I wanted Arsenal to sign Patrick Kluivert.
    - I liked Ashley Cole.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,235 ✭✭✭✭flahavaj

    Man United fan

-I thought Dwight Yorke was a massive waste of money when I heard initially that we had signed him.

-I thought Kleberson, Jordi Cruyff and Karel Poborsky were going to be amazing.

-I appreciate the massive contribution that Ronaldo's goals have made to pur season, but I still think his general play is poor, that he is an arogant, largely unlikable character and have little confidence in his ability to consistently produce on the big occasion.

-I still have the CD of the unofficial Man Utd song for the 96 FA Cup Final "Man Utd Man" in my collection and think its not a bad song, as football songs go and play it when I'm locked.:o

-I wish Phil Neville and Diego Forlan were still at the club.

-I still well up when I rewatch the footage of the 99 Champions league Final

-I think David May is a total legend and find his over-exuberant celebrations after the 99 Final hilarious.

Actually, I just looked up a very old thread (I won't specify which one for reasons of my own embarrassment), and I could have an awful lot more to confess. Worst of all...

    - Many of my older posts resemble the postings of jank.

I hope that isn't the case anymore. I hope JoeSoap has learned to forgive me. I hope he doesn't still think Scott Parker is the best player in the premiership though ;)

With that, he's a thread I happened to be reading a while ago, when I still posted on the CS forum,

and I stumbled upon this post, which I think in the present context, is utterly hilarious:

Sure enough, I do go to Tolka Park to watch Shelbourne wheneve I can, most weeks usually, except when I'm in work late(like tonight), but I don't support them, I have no love for them. I go down because my Brother is a die-hard Shels fan, and I like to go down and sample the eircom league.

I am certainly not a fan of Glasgow Celtic, as I cannot stand the bigotry associated with Scottish Football.

I am a fan of La Liga, but hold no candle for any club that plays in it. Similarly, I don't dislike any one team in it either, except if they happen to be playing against Manchester United at the time, then I hate them!

I think the Italian league is too technical, but AC Milan will the Champions League(now United are gone of course).

Also since it's a confession thread, I'm put up something I once posted :P

Sooooo many as a City fan but here's a couple -

    - I thought Sven was going to be the man to get us relegated
    - I thought Samaras was going to be our 20 goal a season striker (although Pearce did ruin him and his confidence by sticking him on the left)
    - I absolutely hated SWP when he first played for us and thought he was too much of a short arse to ever make it.
    - I wanted Dunne out of the club within a year of him signing.

And the biggest one of all...........

    - I thought we could finish fourth this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,014 ✭✭✭Eirebear

Ok My real ones as a Rangers fan, other than Guivarch.

I thought Paul Le Guen was going to guide us to world domination.

I thought bringing back Walter Smith was a bad move.

I thought Franny Jeffers would revive his career at Rangers

I thought Chris Burke had potential

I thought Davie Weir was an awful buy

There are many many more....but theyll depress me enough for now

    Liverpool fan:

    - left the pub at half time on a certain night in 2005

    - thought Rooney signing for Man U was a mistake (sensed another Gascoigne)*

    - thought Kewell was going to be a key player this year

    * yes I know, not my club, but I'd still like to get it off my chest.

And where are all the Man U fans who were calling for Sir Alex's head when the got dumped out of the Champions League group stage a cfew years back...?

    Football Fan:

I thought Bulgaria would win Euro 2004.

I thought Roma would beat United last season, and this(we did once)

I thought Ireland would qualify for Euro 2004.

I always think Italian clubs will beat English clubs in Champions League. Normally only AC do the business.

I thought Wolves wouldn't win a game in the EPL.

I thought Benoit Pedretti would be a genius.

I thought Dynamo Kiev would win the 99' Champions League. The Serhiy(Sergey) Andreiy double act.

I thought Sheva would destroy the English League.

I(everyone) thought David Marshall was a world class goalkeeper

I thought Rangers fans were likeable.

I thought Sean Thornton would be a maestro.

I thought Rooney would opt for Ireland.

And finally, when I was 7 I thought football was ****.

    • Turned off Sky Sports on an evening in 1999 (not that one).
    • Turned it back on after reading what I thought was the final match review on BBC teletext
    • Told a fellow Man City fan to go back to the toilet when playing Blackburn in 2000, because we had equalised while he was in there
    • Agreed that sticking a tenner on Sven to be the next manager at 15/1 with a fellow Man City fan was a bad idea
    • Thought Glen Whelan, Willo Flood and Paddy McCarthy would be mainstays in the senior Man City and Ireland teams by now
    • A bus driver asked me the result after the UEFA Cup final in Seville, and it was the first time I'd spoken in 2 hours
    • Thought Chris Sutton would flop in Scotland
    • Thought Tore Andre Flo would be a fantastic signing for Rangers

I remember watching this, it was the Div 2 play off againt Gillingham no? although it was on late afternoon not evening if i remember, i believe it was an exciting game with Nicky Weaver being a hero in either a penalty shoot out or Man City come back from being a few goals down?

What i really remember though is Man City had some luminous neon shirt and thinking at the time, "wow Man City are down in the 2nd division!"

As a Villa fan i guess there were a few:

Thought Dwight Yorke was a muppet when he left Villa. I was'nt wrong.

Convinced myself in 98/99 Villa were going to win the premiership after beating arsenal 3-2 at home, i think this was the last time i have seen Villa play great football

Loved Tommy Johnson thought he was the ****, ditto Graham Fenton & Mark Draper.

Ian Taylor should have played for England

i was 11 years old in 1996 when Villa played Leeds off the park (check the youtube Villa were amazing!), this was after the 1994 LC and finishing 2nd in 92/3, i never though i'd face into a decade + of mid table mediocrity with occasional relegation fears, dam you Ellis etc.

Hated Peter Crouch, assumed he would sink like a stone once he left Villa.

    Villa Fan

    1. I thought Djemba Djemba would turn out to be a great signing at Villa. (you would think id know better after all the man utd fans were left utterly dissapointed by the man)

    2. I believed Dave O'Leary would go on to be a great success as Villa manager when he was appointed.

    3. I never liked Gareth Southgate even when he was Villa's captain, and though Ugo Ehiogu was better than him and should have been in the England squad ahead of him at the time.

    4. I thought Luke Moore would go on to big things at Aston Villa

    5. Actually thought Wesley Sneijder and Royston Drenthe would sign for Villa in the summer (they both signed for Real Madrid)

I thought Sean Thornton would be a maestro.
    :o

Also guilty on that charge. In fairness though, Thornton definitely had the ability to at least be a squad player in the Irish team. Shame he was a pisshead with an even pissier attitude.

    My other confessions.

    - Thought Liam George was going to be an Irish team regular.
    - Thought that Alan Bennett would be a quality Premier League centre back.
    - Thought Wes Hoolahan would never make it after he flopped at Livingston.
    - Think that Stephen Hunt is a rubbish player.
    - Laughed my ass off when United signed Cantona.
    - Continually questioned Kevin Kilbane being let play (in hindsight, I realise he was rarely ever the worst of them).
    - Thought Arsene was off his rocker when he sold Petit and Overmars to Barcelona.
    - Thought that Real Betis would dominate Spanish football when they went mad one season and spent loads of money on the likes of Denilson.

I confess that I was completely wrong about Torres. I thought he was overpriced and vastly overrated and he would struggle to get 10-15 goals. How wrong I was. El Niño is now one of my favourite players.

As a Newcastle fan not much. When Roeder was sacked I was dead opposed to Allardyce's appointment, but when he got the job I was somehow persuaded that he could actually be the man. Further back I was wrong about Bellamy. Wasn't impressed at all when Robson signed him, but he turned out to be the key player along with Robert that took us from 11th to 4th, 3rd and 5th place finishes.

    general football confessions:

-thought oba martins would be one of the leagues top goalscorers this season in newcastles fictional return to form
-believed that inter would win the cl this year in celebration of their 100 year anniversary
-believed inter would absolutely HAMMER liverpool in both their ties

    utd confessions:
-have, and still do think wayne rooney is the most overrated player in the world
-didn't rate ronaldo very highly at all, for a long time
-think utd would have won the cl last year with Ruud (still do btw)

    AC Milan Fan.

Thought that Bonera was going the be the perfect replacement for Maldini at centre back.

Thought Nicola Pozzi was going to be amazing.

Thought Marco Boriello was going to be amazing (actually isn't too bad now).

Thought Gilardino was going to be the new Sheva.

Thought Vitally Kutuzov was going to be world player of the year by now.

Thought Ibrahim Ba was going to be amazing.

Thought Emerson was a good buy.

Thought Ronaldinho was going to sign for the last 3 seasons (he will this year!).

Thought Milan were going to sign one of Buffon/Ibrahimovic/Zambrotta when Juve bit the bullet.

Thought Milan would sign Amellia or Frey in January.

Thought Carletto would have been sacked by now after the start to the season.

Thought Berlu actually gave a **** about the club.

Thought we were going to beat Arsenal easily.

Am still of the opinion that Boban was the most under rated midfeilder of the last 20 years.

Still want Milan to resign Sheva even though the majority of fans don't.

    - Thought Sheva would have added to his golden boot by now

    - Was unbelievably angry with Ranieri when he started playing Cech ahead of Cudicini despite Carlo being amazing for us.

    - Don't agree with the club's obsession with the Champion's League

    - Don't see the point of spending alot of money on 14 year old players when we could just as easily buy them aged 18 if they developed right.

    - Have alot of time for Grant

    - I thought Diouf would destroy the premier league (after he had destroyed the then world champions in the World Cup.

    - I thought, pretty much every season, that Kewell would recover fitness and form.

    - I thought La Tallec, Pongolle, Cheyrou, Diao and company would be huge.

    - I thought that, on the back of the Euros, Baros would be banging them in.

    - I thought Cisse would be huge for us.

    General football:

    - I thought Ronaldo was an over-hyped one-trick pony.

    - I thought Man Utd would go to pieces after Van Nistelrooy left.

    - I thought Arsenal would go to pieces after Viera/Henry left.

    - I thought Chelsea would go to pieces after Mourinho left.

I have no confessions to make, I'm usually right about everything. And when I'm not, its usually someone elses fault ;)

    Liverpool Fan:

-I thought Pongolle never got a decent chance and would move somewhere and suddenly be the star of the French national team.
-I thought in 03-04 season that Carragher was finished for Liverpool and just wasn't good enough.
    - I thought for a while that Henchoz was the better player in the Hyppia-Hench partnership.
-I was 100% sure that Morientes would be a legend at the club.

I was however right in thinking that Diouf was a mistake cause i thought he looked like a diving cnut in the 02 World Cup.
I was also right in thinking that Jari Litmanen got a raw deal at the pool and would have been a massive success if he was given a decent shot.
