Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

New hard drive problem with Vista

I bought a new WD Caviar 500 GB SATA Hard Drive to install on my home PC but when I try to install Vista Ultimate 32bit it cuts out at the part where it asks what disk you want to install it on. When I choose the new hard drive it won't let me install and it won't let me format and I get an error messages like these:
Windows could not format a partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code 0x80070057
Failed to format the selected partition. [Error 0x80070057]

How can I get around this???

Edit: I forgot to mention that the new hard drive makes a clicking/ticking noise when it is searching which I found quite worrying because the other smaller WD Caviar's that I have are really silent.

Here are a few images of the error messages. I tried to Google the answer and check a few techie blogs but nobody seems to know the soluation to this problem.

Have you got another bootable cd (Winxp/Linux/Hiren) to boot from and attempt a format? The ticking/clicking sound is a bad sign anyway.

I've been in work/in the pub so I haven't really had alot of time to work on it but I'll try to install XP Pro and Ubuntu and see how it gets on.

The hard drive is brand new so the clicking noise is a very big worry. I might have to send it back to Western Digital if I cannot find a solution.

I worked on this for a large chunk of yesterday and have still not solved the problem. I stuck in a Windows 2000 Pro CD and formatted the new hard drive, it took around 3 hours to complete but I still get the same messages when I try to install Vista. I even tried to install Vista Home Premium and it also failed to install (it cuts out at copying files to the hard drive) and I even got a different error code this time (see below).

    0fbc774fed.jpg

My feeling from the start was that the hard drive was screwed but I wanted to find out for sure before I go through all the hassle of sending it back and trying to get a replacement.

Any help would be much appreciated.

What motherboard do you have? See if there's an option to set the SATA controllers to "compatibility mode" or similar.

On my system I have 6Hdd's (I think) and I couldn't install Vista until I disconnected all hdds bar one. Once installed I reconnected the drives and was done. Don't ask me :/

As far as I know the mother board is a Intel Server Board S3000AH and it is in a Dell Power Edge 440SC.

I had another 80GB and 160GB hard drive in with it and tried to install it with both of them (together & separately) but I always end up with the same error messages.

I've even tried to Google it again and although other people are having the same type of problems as me there doesn't seem to be any answers out there at all, which I find very odd

Why dont you just run the WD diagnostic tools? That will tell you straight out if there is a problem with the HDD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,535 ✭✭✭Raekwon

Easier said then done. The new HDD wouldn't even appear in the BIOS so in the end I had to hot swap the disk (risky) and eventually it came online. I then ran the Western Digital diagnostic tool and it failed on all four tests. So basically it's b****xed

Now I have to see if Elara will exchange it but they will more then likely fob me off too Western Digital and I'll be luck to get a replacement before May

That doesn't quite make sense, how is vista detecting it if the bios is not?

Probably would be quicker through WD but if you want to go through elara then just quote the sale of goods and supply of services act 1980 whereby the seller is responsible for all defects i.e. they cannot refuse to take it back *and* they must replace it within a reasonable timeframe or your money back. In fact if this is a brand new harddrive (just bought it very recently) and is dead pretty much after the first time you used it then you can claim your money back instantly under the aforementioned act as you had not legally accepted the goods until you had gotten a reasonable chance to ensure they were working without fault.

    http://www.vistax64.com/vista-installation-setup/87370-error-message-0x80300025.html
I want to install windows vista Ultimate , but I get the error code
0x80300025 while he's trying to install windows. It says: Could not make a
letter for the partition on the harddisk. I've got a Seagate 250 gb SATA II
harddisk, it says it recognizes it . What should I do ?
Error 0x80070057: The parameter is incorrect
I am receiving this error when trying to copy the dat file from a virtually
mounted VCD. The utility I am using to mount the image is Daemon tools 4, I
have also tried Magic ISO (I did not receive an error message using Magic ISO
but it would not copy the AVESQUE01.dat file). Any idea on what causes this?
I have windows xp and exchange 2003 and using outlook
2003. In my contact list I have quite a large number of
contacts about 1500+ contacts. Some of the contacts are
in groups and some individually. When I want to send an
email to the users (all 1500+ of them) in my contact list
(as a bulk mail) Outlook goes through the motion of
sending it and then comes up with a "outlook send/receive
progress" box and the error message is "Task 'ABCXYZ.COM -
sending' reported error (0x80070057):'Could not complete
the operation. One or more parameter values are not
    valid.'

I have looked and researched on this particular error and
have found many people facing this same error message but
no absolute solution to this problem.

Can some of you Outlook Guru out there help me with this
    error problem.

    Thanks
    Boon

    Hi,

I'm constantly getting error code 0x80070057 while trying to update Vista
Ultimate edition. It's a completely new installation on a brand new PC.

My initial updates worked - about two updates installed, then I started
    getting this error.

I tried clearing my SoftwareDistribution folder to get Windows Update to
download the files again - but I still have the same error. WindowsUpdate.log
doesn't seem to shed any light on the matter, but there are some interesting
lines in it. Here's the dump of my latest update (where I tried to download
two updates). Note the first one (DreamScene preview) seems to immediately
fail with 0x80070057, the second repeatedly calls error 0x800f081e before the
fatal 0x80070057 - however I think the warnings are probably a red herring:

Sounds to be a Generic System Error Code. Ususally pertaining to an invalid parameter. In this case, I'd say the Hard Drive. If its fuxxored that might be a good reason for it.

Thats worrying. I dont think youve found the source of the problem then.

Burn this to CD and run it. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com just start running through the toolkit.

That doesn't quite make sense, how is vista detecting it if the bios is not?

I had a hard drive (160GB) running Vista so I installed that as master & the new 'dead' hard drive as slave so I could run the dignositic test but it never appeared in Vista and when I checked the BIOS it was no where to be seen. I re-attached it a few times and it eventually came online.

I filled in the 'return item' form on my Elara account last night but I didn't even get an acknowledgement email. In the invoice that I received it clearly states that once a product is open then it cannot be returned to Elara. I'll give them a call later and see what the story is.
