Surely this would be better in the Offaly forum? As i can not see too many people care who drives a red MR2, its just a red 10 year old car.

Offaly forum might be best, actually there is a Tullamore community forum (not boards.ie) http://www.tullamorelife.net/

Again the friendliness of folks on Boards.ie is truely shown....

It was only a simple question, Thanks for nothing...

It wasn't me you saw but I liked the MR2 so much I bought this a couple of months ago. Revision 5 as well (UK import).

    Isn't there a specialised boy-racer/chav thread here:

Simple question, simply answered  You wanted to know who drives this car, the suggestion directed you to where people who live there might be able to answer. Stop being so sensitive.

I personal would give you a warning for that if I could.

Firstly the thread is not specialised, its general.

Secondly, if your going to be taring boy racers and "chavs" with us people who like high performance then back it up with some evidence.

And actully "chavs" or the scum as I like to call them have nothing to do with our community, we have a hard time as it is trying to protect our cars from the scum. Without you going plastering us down with either of them crowds.

So give me something to back up that statement.

Well for starters the boy-racer comment from MOG7:

I'm no anti-speed zealot, quite the opposite in fact - speed on an appropriate road/conditions is not the font-of-all-evil the media would lead us to believe. Whenever I do see INAPPROPRIATE speed being used however it's 90% certain to be some souped-up boy-racer in a bespoilered Jap-box with obligitory bean-can exhaust. And it's the piss-poor attitude exemplified by the quote above that has lead to the lurid headlines, inevitable crackdown and general consensus amongst the general public that 'speed kills'.

Well your description 'people who like high performance' could easily be used as a euphemism for boy racers/chavs. I'm not saying that all drivers of high performance cars are 'chavs' but there is a certain demograpic who thrash the ****e out of aged Japanese machinery on public roads that I have no hesitation in calling chavs.

Well 'scum' is a very harsh word... I deliberatly tried to avoid it...

Stop being so sensitive?!? Why should i? I asked a simple question in what i think would be the appropriate section of the forum, he drives an mr2, a performance car, there is a chance he would be in the motoring section, just like Smokie72. Ten minutes after i make the topic some tw@t decides to stick a thread failed logo?!

The comment i made about what speed he was doing is something this man would understand and he wasn't speeding!

I'm 21 and i drive a performance car - Straight away i will be branded a Boy Race chav scum whatever by anyone who see's me! Which is totally unfair. What really makes me any different to you? I drive a performance car and you probably drive a family car... Yet i am a very friendly young lad and you are..... just a prejudice!

Oh and smokie get yourself over to www.mr2oc.co.uk , lots of other nice friendly lads over there. I have a project starting in the next week which might interest you.

    9:57-11:22 is 85 mins mate, not 10.

Also, stop being so sensitive. It's a fairly specific question about a 10 yr old Toyota.

As a matter of interest what's this performance car that, by your own admission, gets you branded a scummy chav?

  • Registered Users Posts: 214 ✭✭smokie72

I'm already a member of mr2oc.co.uk MOG7. Thanks for the tip anyway. I've heard that you're doing a v6 conversion soon. I wouldn't consider a mr2 to be a chav mobile. Great looking car and the one I have is the factory spec unmodified version. I'm happy enough with the way toyota made them in the factory. Some women seem to like that as well ;).

Again these posts have just shown the ill informed and general ignorance of the certain posters.

Firstly, the MR2 is probably one of the last cars to be taken into the boyracer/chav/sum fold (thank god). 90% of MR2 are driven by true car enthusiasts, as they are not that fast and expensive to insure.

Secondly i love the condescending attitude towards 10-15yr old jap car. But answer me this, why is there an abundance of post regarding 'my 2006 bmw, alfa, ford is broken down' but very little 'my 1998 toyota, honda, mazda is broken down'???

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,231 ✭✭✭Rowley Birkin QC

I actually like MR2's and drive a 10 yr old car myself, by no stretch of the imagination a performance car.

Also I'm a fan of the even older AE86's, when they are in the right hands.

Sorry if the posts caused offence, it just seemed like a fairly pointless thread with boyracer leanings!

    +1000

The mr2 is an excellent car guys. Made by a manufacturer who know their stuff and have there cars still running beautifully on the road 10-15 years later. I know a few people who would like an mr2 and they are definitly not "chavs". Great car that handles well is very reliable and is affordable.

The Japs make the most reliable car. Had a 95 toyota cynos before and not one non routine problem from it (clutch and timing belt to be done but thats all). Have a mate with a BMW and nothing but problems from it. I have a mate who always says why would people buy a 10 year old car if they can afford newer and its simple as that they are better cars by far.

  • Registered Users Posts: 214 ✭✭smokie72

To add what chris said I owned a 96 toyota cynos for 4 years before I got a mr2 and the only thing apart from yearly service I got done were a battery change and new tyres. That's why I stuck with toyota. If they haven't been abused they get you from a to b. Remember the corolla ad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0epP7jvwEM

ah now guys, the Mr2 is a bit of a poor man's "do-it-up" car - way too many of them going around wit massive exhausts on it thinking they are driving ferrari's. I really wudnt call it a performance car either to be honest, thats like calling a civic or a saxo with an ironing board for a spoiler and performance car. Like ok, if your looking at spending a certain budget on a red car, and wear a certain type of pattern baseball cap in a certain angle, go for it, you'll look great in it pulling out of your dad's chipper.

Before any of u ask, I drive a factor spec 0-60 in 6.4 second 1.3 litre japanese saloon with 4 doors. I think it looks great, and yes, I paid for the performance. Thinking you looking good in an MR2 is grand, just not my sorta thing, or the sorta thing of anybody I know, or anybody I would wanna know.

    Each to their own.

PS: Can we rename this thread "Mr2 debate?" - cuz its got nothing to do with offaly and i wouldn't wanna be associated with a forum that sends shout-outs to the kind of people driving MR2's at high rev's through offaly.

and MR2 owner everywhere breaths a sigh of relief.

Hey, Senna, just wanted to stress that I dont want to offend anybody, Its just my opinion of the car and its impresson it gives. But then again, in some parts of the country the MR2 might be the coolest thing ever and you might be so cool if you have one. Put it this way. Its not be on top gear in the near future.... other than flying into a caravan! haha

Mmm. A stock MR2 turbo does 0-60 in about 5.5 seconds and has a top speed of about 150mph. You paid more and got less performance. You look kinda silly slagging off a faster car.
