Now that the MDC have been forced to stop electioneering and have decided not to take part in the election, it seems there is the possibility of a legal challenge to the second election. My understanding is that, under the Zim election laws, any re-run must take place within 21 days of the original election. As this deadline is long passed, it may be open to challenge this second election as illegal, and as the only election which is legal is the original election, the MDC candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai, could be declared the winner as he had the most votes.

While that may happen, the rule of law seems to no longer be in place in Zim, with many lawyers having fled the country in fear of their lives, so its unclear what will happen. It may be that any legal challenge will take place in the knowledge that Mugabe will never step down, and will continue his rule with the continued support of the army & police, but the MDC might judge that it will put enough pressure on Mugabe to force him to negotiate, especially in light of the fact that his neighbours, even Mbeki, seem to be fed up with Mugabe and are now publically saying so.

    Absolutely not.

Why not? Because it would unite the country against the west. Zimbabwe is a very racist country, and with good reason. They hate the British and the white ascendency, so the last thing they want is the Brits coming back with guns.

An all-African UN peacemaking mission would be far better, with South Africa at the helm. SA is a western country with a black majority and a black leadership, and would be welcomed by many Zimbabwians, unlike an all-white Anglo-European force.

One thing is for sure, the world must not sit back and do nothing.

You couldn't make it up! No oil but plenty platinum!

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/africa/article4207971.ece

"Anglo American, the London-based mining giant, is to make what is believed to be the largest foreign investment in Zimbabwe to date, just as the British Government puts pressure on companies to withdraw from the country.

Anglo will invest $400 million (£200 million) to build a platinum mine in Zimbabwe — a move that has raised concern among some of the company’s shareholders and been condemned by politicians.

The Foreign Office was investigating tonight whether the company’s investment breached sanctions against Zimbabwe. Anglo insisted that its involvement in the country did not break the law.

The decision, which was criticised roundly as likely to give succour — and possibly money — to the Mugabe regime, is in stark contrast to the policy of nearly all other main British corporations in Zimbabwe. They are either withdrawing from the country or waiting for Mr Mugabe to be deposed before expanding their businesses. "

With all this nonsense going on in Zimbabwe at the moment I think it is time for the British to act. They have an obligation to the unfortunate people of that former colony. They should have a quiet word with Mugabe and tell him that the game is up. That half wit Mbeki should be brought to one side and told to stay out of it or suffer the consequences (economic and military). I know the British armed forces are stretched a bit at the moment, (other NATO countries could take up more slack in Afghanistan to help them out.) but it wouldn’t take much to put manners on the ramshackle Zimbabwe “military”. They would probably run as soon as they see the first paratrooper’s descending on them. They would certainly be no match for a European army. But I think the threat would be enough.

Why Britain? Ireland should invade Zimbabwe. :)

it seems the the pressure on the ANC is finally forcing them to speak out. we could yet see his 'retirement' being negotiated as a result of today's statement.

It's in too many people's interests behind Mugabe who wield the power for them to concede power whether he's removed or not.

I wouldn't imagine the military in particular would be too accomodating to the next leader unless it's more of the same, especially given the carte blanche they have now.

There is never a good reason for racism.

Things seem to be hotting up for Uncle Bob. UN Security Council have criticised him, The ANC have and now Mandela talks of a "tragic failure of leadership in Zimbabwe".

All three have been notoriously silent in the past. His friends are turning against him. Hopefully we are in the end game now and he'll be rotting in hell before too long.

Mark Thatcher should be airdropped into Zimbabwe, from an airbase off the coast of Belize, singing the Rhodesian national anthem, with a SAS bodyguard dressed as Gollywogs. An interim regime of carefully-picked manatees will rule the country to prevent accusations of racism.

Seriously, makes as much sense as any of the other Invasion Plans here.

Mugabe has made much of his career out of being relentlessly 'attacked' and 'undermined' by the 'Britishers'; its his scapegoat for any endogenous problem.

    Western Occupation: idiocy.
    AU/UN: maybe.

My bet is that ZIM will declare a Military coup as the final attempt for Mugabe and his cronies to retain power, and to retain the farms they have stolen from ZIM citizens and the billions they have pocketed from the country.

The west should stay out of this (besides we are having our own problems with democracy in the European Union) the Zimbabwean people should be left to defeat Mr. Mugabe by the ballot box or by force themselves. History has shown the only system of government that will work – if any system does “work” – is one that’s borne out of internal conflicts and civil war, perhaps the UN should give the Zimbabwean working class weapons? anyway....your suggestion that British Empire should invade another country to set up a puppet government is not desirable
