rips??

    Im new to surfing and was hoping for some advice Im concerned with the dangers of surfing, rips ect Im thinking of poping out to Lahinch next week are rips something I really need to worry about, any advice would be great.

    You need to be wary of rips alright but they're not really a big deal, not at Lahinch anyway. There's usually a rip at the south end of the beach, in front of O'Looney's, but beginners tend to go further up the beach anyway. Keep an eye out for dark, rippled patches of water where waves aren't breaking. If you do get caught in a rip just paddle out of it parallel to the beach, not towards the beach. Don't worry about em too much.

    Thanks for that word of advice, What part of Lahinch beach should I stick to as a beginner?

    Depends on the day really, around the far end of the prom is a good bet. If there's a surf school lesson on (and there usually is) just stay near them.

    The rip in lahinch tends to from at the south end of the breach.

    The other thing you have to watch in Lahinch is to get out befor the tide starts to cover rocks a long the sea wall, about two hours before high tide.

    The lads in the surf shops should be able to tell you where is safe but generall down to the right (north end)

    What about tides? If you do swim parallel and get out of the rip, and you're way out back where no waves are breaking, how do you get back in if the tide is going out? Would that prevent you from being able to paddle back in? If you are not in a rip and you are WAY out beyond breaking waves, if you paddle towards the shore are you always going to make progress or can tides and other things apart from rips prevent you from getting back in?
