I have a question about Galway that I want to ask in Irish. Would I be able to start such a thread without having to write it bilingually or being shunted to the all Irish After Hours sub-forum?

Could you post it both in Irish and English? I'd have a go at answering it but my written Irish is a lot worse than my spoken Irish. Ceapaim go mbeadh deacrachtaí agam.

@Malice - I know where you're coming from but does it not kind of defeat the purpose of me putting it in Irish in the first place? Ideally I'd be looking for someone to answer me back in Irish if possible. If I didn't get the answer I needed I'd try English.

Thanks to all for the support but I think I better wait to see what the mods say before I do anything.

Cur go dhátheangach é. Ní fhéadaidís fadhb a bheith acu mar sin… Ach ní dhéarfainn go mbeadh ar aon chuma.

Well I know I would prefer to see something written in both just to make sure I understand it correctly. There's no point giving you a detailed answer on something completely wrong :).

Whatever I ask now will be a disappointment to ye.

Malice I suggest that you don't give a detailed response if you're not 100% sure what the question is. I can respond to something like 'ní thuigim do cheist' (I don't understand your question) by rephrasing or simplifying the question.

By writing in Irish, I'm not trying to exclude people who don't speak it or be elitist about it (I'm only intermediate standard myself). I'm hoping instead to encourage people to take part in keeping this ancient language of ours alive and kicking. I don't think posting bilingually will achieve that, it's an overly onerous requirement that would quickly see the use of Irish abandoned. Who'd be bothered responding to me in Irish if they also have the same burden of replying bilingually? I'm asking you to maybe consider using a dictionary or using 'cad is brí le..?' if you're interested to find out what I'm on about. Is there not room for a few threads in Irish amongst all the English ones?

So here's the question for what it's worth:

An bhfuil club oíche lán-Ghaeilge ar siúl i nGaillimh?

    Tá.

    Anois cá bhfuil mo bhronntanas?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,942 ✭✭✭topper75

Níl, ach buail isteach do Áras na Gael ar shráid Dominick agus tá Gaeilge á labhairt ag cúpla daoine ann ar aon nós.

No there isn't, but call into Aras na Gael on Dominick street and Irish will be spoken by a few people in there at any rate.

    How can I give a detailed response to a yes/no question ;)?

Here's my answer for what it's worth:
Níl a fhios agam. Cheapaim nach bhfuil sa baile mór ach bfheidir sa Ghaeltacht, mar shample ins an Spidéal.

Go raibh míle maith agat. Bhí mé ag lorg rud cosúil le Club Sult i mBaile Átha Cliath. Bíonn bannaí ceoil agus DJ ag Club Sult de ghnáth. Ach tá Gaillimh i bhfad níos gaire dom agus tá áthas orm go bhfuil club den chineál sin ann freisin.

This is the third forum I've seen these lyrics posted on!

Poll Dubh, Club Áras na nGael. Ní théim ann mé féin. Tá sé beagánín "Shinnerish". Tá na cailíní agus leaids a noibríonn ann go deas áfach!

That's a subforum of After Hours - it's here people come to talk specifically about Galway. I mightn't get as big a response for an Irish post but I can live with that. Could you not tolerant the occasional thread in Irish?
