You dont have to be posh to have some class. Yes cans work in the pav doesnt mean to say it isnt a shit hole.

Lets just get down to what people dont want to hear. The oldbar died due to poor sales. The Nubar is going down the same path. Isnt this an indication that the students of dcu, by enlarge dont want a pub on campus ?

Couldn't agree more. Personally I think hanging around chugging cans is as big a turn off as the NuBar itself really. Now if it was a question of cans or no bar then I'd obviously take the former solution but lets face it, that's not what we're talking about here.

The problem is that people will only take stock of what they have when it's gone. Everyone misses the Old Bar and goes on about how great it was, yet it was only every busy on a Tuesday. Also, at the time most people complained about how out of date it was and that it needed to be renovated.

Now, go to NUIG and take a look at their bar, it's basically the same as our Old Bar used to be yet is always packed. Price wise things didn't fair much better, the last time I was there I paid something like €6 for a bottle Kopperberg. Sure they had Fosters or Bavaria for €3 something a pop but outside of that it was normal bar prices yet people still went and there was always a good buzz about the place.

So folks, ask yourself the question, if they reopened the Old Bar, got students behind the bar serving people, put some comfy tables and chairs in there similar to the layout of old and continued €3 Tuesdays, what do you think would happen? Would anything change? Well my money would be on no, it'd be exactly as before, people would go on Tuesdays and the place would be dead the rest of the time.

So what needs to be done? Well how about we close the bar for a week or two and see how people like it? Oh they'll shout and scream but I can guarantee you the majority of those complaining will be those who hardly ever go there in the first place. Either way, maybe after that people will go there more often, it's a simple of case of trying to get across the point that the bar is a business and if you want it to stay open then you have to use it. Most other colleges/students have grasped that concept so perhaps it's time for DCU to do the same.

i was up in the slipper last night and talking to ken (the manager) they do hope to run a promotion upstairs on a tuesday night, just trying to organise it, as he said it wouldnt be all drinks three euro just some of the ones on tap or whatever, as he'd have to see the viability of the option before going all in. I know he hopes to have it up and running for next week anyway.

What an utterly ridiculous situation. DCU is being ridiculously stingy considering all the income they must get from fees, grants & renting out of space and facilities.

DCU (along with all other 3rd level institutions) are in the middle of a huge funding crisis, so they need to make as much money as possible from non-Government funding sources.

So whats the story with the decision? The bar is a club (hense the membership), and therefore every memeber has a vote (there was a load of trouble over this a few years ago).

Lets face facts, if Fibber can run 3 euro thurs days and be in town (expensive propety), which include free soft drinks, I think DCU can manage it. If they're losing money on the bottles, dont sell bottles. dont sell glass coke, use plastic bottles.

Is the finacial report public knowledge? I've always wanted to set up a bar

The problem here is the bar doesn't get enough people to come on days other than Tuesdays to cover the loss-leader of 3 euro Tuesdays.

So why not work on improving the other nights and keeping €3 Tuesday?

I was outside the bar last night at 10ish, it was so empty, I couldn't get over it. I can't believe the Slipper hasn't capitalised on the student population sooner! It's a grand pub for students, I don't know why more people don't use it. I'd rather go there than NuBar anyway.

For years though the slipper didn't want to be associated with the college.

It's understandable, I mean you don't make massive amounts of money from students, and as a pub, you're locals keep you afloat. Not many codgers want to be surrounded by twisted tennagers when they're sippin on their Guinness.
Then you've the hassle of ID-ing massive amounts of people more than you're used to, not to mention the reputation you could make over one dodgy night. The older crowd are, generally, more stable, finacially speaking at least.

But fair play to the slipper for taking it on.

is this €4 tuesday real or one of those rumours?

was talking to the manager in the slipper (ken) and i know he's organising some deals for tomorrow night, when i was talking to him he just said that certain drinks were at comission price.

he had organised one maybe start of this semester end of last cant really remember, upstairs in the lounge with Karaoke and all, was a savage night even if only about 10 ppl turned up, its not where you are but who you're with kinda nights.

The whole problem is the publicity of it and tryign to get

    Trying to get what?

I'd happily go to the Slipper if there was a good crowd there. Why it hasn't been established as a bar for DCU students is beyond me.

Because, like mehfesto2 said, they never really wanted to be a DCU bar for a long time. I used to drink there regularly when I was in DCU but if there were more than a few of us, some of the staff could be quite rude. Also, if you looked under a certain age, they would point blank refuse to serve you in the front room.

I've never had an issue in the slipper, even there with a large gang (I've been there after matches).

What about the pub down on the Swords Road, (on the way towards Drumcondra near Airport Take Away) next to the Bank of Ireland? What's the like?

The Viscount? The Slipper and the viscount are similar pubs. They're pubs, there's atmosphere, chippers close for nyom nyoms after drinking...

There was a good DCU crowd in the slipper last Tues. I had a great night. I think.

I agree with Mark, previously, when Mark would have been a student, there was issues with the slipper - rude staff, people not serving students... But I've been there a lot recently and I've had no problems.

It's fairly poor, not just do you have to put up with a ****ty bar thats mostly empty, but now they've pulled the €3 drinks. They should just market 1, maybe 2 brands of beer, then sell that for 3. Like UCD used to, or maybe still do.

They have amstel there which is about €3.20, so qualifies as cheap beer. Only problem is it's awful and they don't really advertise it enough.

Before DCU, in NIHE days we all went to the Slipper and they loved us. There was no bar on campus then in 89 or 90 it opened and the Slipper's trade died a death for a year or two .. but what goes around comes around as they say.
