Strange one

Last night I decided to play some cash in one of the main casinos in Dublin. I sat into a 1/2 omaha game and felt I was playing well and that it was a very profitable table - it was also the first time in a while I'd felt that much confidence at a table. So obviously I really didn't want to leave ........

There were 3-4 players on my table that all knew each other (I assume regulars). There were a couple of short stacks - buying in for 50 or 100 and then 3-4 semi deep stack 200+ BB.

There were a few things i noticed that really un-nerved me. One of the so called 50 stacks went all in and got 2 callers (regulars) - both checked it down to the river and turned up their hand. The OOP checker had the 2nd nuts and guy in position had the nuts......... Now this by itself is nothing, but a few other things i noticed.........

There would be limpers into a pot and the last regular (1) would raise it, a couple of callers and another regular (2) would reraise it say 150 or so. If they forced everyone else out of the pot they would now just check it down with the 50/60 so dead money in there and they would both declare their hands on the river whether it was a bag of garbage or the nuts.........

This happened between 6-8 times that I really noticed.

In the end I got up and left and went back playing holdem. Despite the fact I was doing well and i was very unhappy leaving that table.

    Thoughts?

If it was the Fitz (and I assume it was as it is 1/2 Omaha), then there are a number of regulars who for some inane reason don't bet against each other when they are the only ones left in the pot. It makes no sense whatsoever, but they don't bet to get people out of the pot and split it or let the best hand win deliberately. If it is the people I am thinking of (there are a few of them) they are not the type of people who will collude, they play most hands for most prices and call most draws and are usually what makes the game good although they can kill you if they get some cards.

Personally, my opinion is that as long as there is no collusion aspect to it, and with these guys I know there isn't, then I don't really care what happens once they get to headsup. They are the value and I love to see them in the game (although it can get quite big with a couple of them in it at times).

sounds like casino employees/shills were playing in order to get the game going

fairly common in Vegas, haven't seen it much here

I think i have played omaha maybe twice live and also noticed this. I bought in for €100 as I dont usually play omaha, just wanted to sit for an hour after busting from the tourney.

I think it goes on quite a bit where the regulars try to squeeze the players that buy in for 50 or 100.

Yeh I'd say this was the Fitz as I was there last night and this was happening alot. There is defo no malice in it and in fairness what they do heads up is up to them its not an angle shoot. What time were you playing at? I left about 11 prob missed you. The main culprit is Stuart but there is no malice in him at all hes a nice guy he prob feels he doesnt want to take much off the guys he knows and thats up to him.

I can think of about 4 guys who do it in there, and if it was collusion does anyone thing that the other regulars in that game (myself included) would not make a big issue of it?

By any chance did you bust out when you flopped a set of jacks only to lose to runner runner Vs a straight when the guy didn't realise for a good 30 seconds that he had the nuts

That's why I'm asking TBH. I think it would be made a big deal of if it were collusion - that's why I didn't use that word in the first post.

This doesn't detract from the fact that I felt very uncomfortable watching it happen, so much so that I left the table. As I saw it, 3-4 player soft playing each other. 2-3 50-100 stacks gambling. 3-4 players trying to play omaha. If i were one of the players all in I would not be happy about the situation.

Just a little tid bit - i love when people turn over their hands on the river and declare "house" when the board isn't paired and people say "nice hand" and the dealer has to look twice before asking "where's the house". That never fails to make me smile :)

No I dont think that was me. I was in Seat 8 from the start of the game to 11ish. You?

Ya, I can see why you would think it a bit strange alright, but the fact that it doesn't happen too often, coupled with the fact that I have just got used to it, means that I don't think too much about it now, especially since it is very much a small pool of players in the whole anyhow that play that game in general.

I see your point though, but considering the above, I'm not sure if anything would/should be done about it in this particular instance if you did make a complaint about it, which you would be withink your rights to definitely, as it does constitute soft playing to an extent.

I remember someone leaving that seat soon after I joined. I was in seat 9/10 wasn't sure if it were 9 or 10 handed come to think of it.

I didn't complain - i just asked if i could move back to holdem. My problem was that I knew only 1 other person at the table, so at times it felt like we were sitting into a private game with a slightly different set of rules.

Cheers Dom - hopefully we'll battle again soon
