I should have posted an update to this before but I was not too pleased with the outcome. After breaking into my car and stealing sat nav etc. he broke into my wifes car some weeks later stealing birthday presents. He was caught and had his day in court. His free legal aid told the judge that he would undergo another drug treatment course so the judge let him off and told him not to appear before her again. I found out later that he had over 60 previous convictions. So what can you do with scumbags like this, this really disgusts me.

Presumably he is a heroin addict, not much can be done unfortunately, many women addicted to it go thieving and on the game, guys just go thieving.
A lad here committed armed robbery and got off scott free, at a guess he must have done a fair to medium amount of singing.

Too many of them use the drug card to get off, nobody forces a gun to their head to start it all off.

No, but more than a few have been passed a joint laced with heroin unknowing to themselves. Also more than a few go into the prison system as non IV drug users and come out junkies. Also many heroin addicts come from fairly horrific backgrounds so it's all well and good to say no one put a gun to their head but if you're 14 or 15 and haven't had a family meal as long as you remember and your parents are alcoholics, one in prison or your mum being abused it's not so easy to stay off such sh1t.

    A bit OT, but...

Actually, we could stop this in the morning if we wanted to by providing legal heroin to addicts. Unfortunately the State seems determined to protect the revenue stream of the drug dealers, at the expense of the OP and other victims of drug-related theft.

Probably haven't a clue what I'm talking about here but could a civil case not be brought against him? Maybe double jeopardy applies or it would be too costly but I'm just curious if its technically possible??

I'd imagine the problem wouldn't be getting the judgement but getting the money.

This is a farce. Judges have a responsibility to society as well yet this scum of the earth gets to roam free among us soon to rob from the innocent again despite the facts in front of this judge. Are judges answerable to nobody?

I don't get all the bleeding heart bullsh1t in this country. If he's been in court, you must know his name. Pay a few hardmen to relieve him of the use of his legs. Lets see him ninja his way into your car park after that. You never know, he might detox while he's recovering. Everybody wins!

Exactly my point, civil actions are taken presumably so the injured party gets damages but in this case the dude is getting his legal aid paid by us tax paying fools so what would be the point of a civil order.

Then again if it was that judge again would you even get the judgement....

Probably not since as Anan1 said you wouldn't get anything out of him. I'm just wondering if it possible to do, even if it is a totally pointless exercise. Anyway I don't want to derail the OPs thread so this probably isn't the place to discuss it.

Sorry for your trouble OP. Maybe instead of paying your road tax next time just spend the money developing an awesome drug habit. You'll have a great time and be immune from prosecution for any other crimes so it's win win really!

Experience tells us that a heroin addict will do anything to get heroin. Prohibition means that the addict has to pay lots of money to criminals for heroin, rather than receiving it from the State. The inevitible result is widespread theft.

Agreed, nothing judges can do about it. The only way to keep these lads from nicking stuff is to lock them up for life, and even most murderers don't get that.

Just give them the damned Heroin, problem solved.

The justice system in this country is a joke. Nobody gets punished for petty crime. In cases like this, the best outcome a victim can hope for is receiving their goods back if the criminal is caught in time.

Without trying to sound like a smartass, it might be an idea to stop leaving valuables in you car(s)...

Many of the lads who get methadone off the state sell it to buy heroin  It's not widespread as they should be taking the methadone supervised but at times this is not possible and they can take it away.

At the end of the day you're lucky.
Most car thieves won't bother for niceties such as breaking the smallest window on the car, usually you get a brick heaved through the sidewindow, the door bent back (on purpose), hood stamped on, or the car stolen, crashed and set on fire.
Leaving valuables in the car is never a smart thing, so never leave anything in the car that would upset you to loose.
You got off lightly, even though it's a pain in the arse.
Had my own car window smashed in Finglas a few years back and my wallet stolen (see, silly me, own fault) and when my van (old VW smoker) was impounded because the Nigerian embassy didn't like the look of it, again, window smashed and this time radio stolen. In the police pound.
So I feel your pain OP.

You have an extremely narrow interpretation of off topic.
I think it's relevant to the thread.
Had I said "horse manure really makes my roses come up lovely", now that's off topic.
Gards paid of course, but I still had to get window fixed and buy a new radio and fit it.
When my wallet was stolen the bills where all mine including new side window.
A point you conveniently ignored or maybe you didn't bother to read my post properly...

The small triangle window is one of the most expensive.

Agree with another poster here. We should just provide them with Heroin and accommodation and threaten them with withdrawal of the drug if there are any crimes or public order offences. It would soon be a real threat to them, since it would remove the availability of the drug through illegal means. Would be far far cheaper for us in the long term. And hopefully they will OD themselves into non-existence.

And hopefully they will OD themselves into non-existence.

Actually, with clean legal heroin, it's a pretty safe drug. Registered addicts were able to get heroin in the UK from the 20s until 1970 or so, and lots of addicts were doctors or pharmacists with good jobs.

Wiki on heroin-assisted treatment for addicts.

You're missing the point. They rob because heroin is prohibited. The current system guarantees huge profits for the drug barons, partly funded through theft by addicts. This is why the biggest fans of prohibition are the major drug gangs - your threat to deprive addicts of legal heroin would be music to their ears.

Yes, the gangs had started attacking head shops before the Government lent them a hand and shut them down.

Your missing the point. They rob to get the money to pay for it but for most the violence and lack of any real responsibility is also a major problem. By giving free heroin we remove the dealers. By denying it to the troublesome people over short periods when bad behavior is displayed we can train them like dogs. And the withdrawal of the drug is helped by the fact that there is illegal supply anymore(because they can't compete on price).

Stop and think about this for a second. The moment you deny an addict legal heroin you reactivate the black market.

Nope, only way to tackle the drug dealers is to target all users of all drugs. Have seriously hefty fines for possession of any amount of hash, ecstacy, cocaine etc. Should have been done in the Celtic Tiger era. Of course if that was done the dealers would just introduce the likes of crystal meth at looney cheap prices and then hike the prices, a fine won't deter the folks on that sh1t. No teenagers / young adults fear being caught as a deterrent to using so called soft drugs

In my view any user of any illegal drug is as guilty as the dealer be they a Garda, student or doctor, and let's face it, drug use crosses all demographics.

They are addicts, they will pay the fine and do it again. Shoot the dealers and its a much harder drug to get their hands on. The sad reality is, there will always be a supply and always a demand:(
