Sports category reorganisation

    Howdy,

The Sports category is starting to get a bit unwieldy in size, so we'd like to organise it into some sort of sub-classification system. We're a bit stumped on the best way to do this ourselves, so thought you guys might have some suggestions on how we can break down the section into manageable chunks :)

Not really looking for a "Move X to Y" sort of thread here, more a "this list of forums could be categorised thusly", any help would be appreciated.

    How about:

    Team Sports -

    Soccer
    Rugby
    Baseball
    Basketball
    etc?

    Water Sports -

    Swimming
    Sailing
    Scube
    Angling
    Surfing
    etc?

    Indoor Sports -

    Darts
    Bowling
    Snooker & Pool
    Self Defense
    etc?

Something along those lines might work?

Sports with Animals could be another one but its the naming of the catagories might cause problems?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭Gandalf23

    How about something like this;

"Fieldsports" for GAA, soccer, Rugby etc
"Snowsports" for snowboarding and skiing etc
"Horse Racing and Greyhounds" for, well, horseracing and greyhounds
    "watersports" all water related stuff
"Athlethics and Running" all olympic kinda stuff
"Other sports" to include everything thats left

This is not a comprehensive list and will need some tweaking. Bt something along those lines could work.

I was also going to suggest Fieldsports, Watersports etc.

Not sure about Horse Racing and Greyhounds needing it's own category, plus what would happen to Equestrian in that case?

Skiing/snowboarding are already together in Wintersports.

Athletics/ Running sounds good that way.

And other sports sounds almost insulting to them. Plus it'd leave out Sports and Sports Trivia which wouldn't really fit in any of those categories.

A general Sports section is good with Sports trivia as a sub-forum. Where else could I have asked about Lawn Bowls? :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,399 ✭✭✭✭r3nu4l

Could we have "Aqua sports" instead of "Water sports"?

    I've a really filthy mind :(

I like 6th's suggestions but also think that Gandalf is right to say "Field Sports" instead of Team sports as Basketball is a (mostly) indoor team sport.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,247 ✭✭✭✭6th

Yeah feild is better than team, swimming can be a team event as can alot of others.

    How about Ball Sports? :D

You're not alone. T'was the first thing that popped into my mind too.

If it would help you to clean them up a little, you could delete Darts, Horse racing, Pro-wrestling and Snooker & Pool. As these are not really sports.

I'd disagree with you on Horseracing as it's a very active for jockeys. Greyhound racing on the other hand...

Can the Boards Team Forum be unattached from "Soccer" please.

I feel we have become more than a Sub Forum now, so if that is possible, I'd like it to be done.

Okay, I've had some thoughts, what do people think of this?

depends. Actual wrstling is, and UFC/MMA definagtely are, and get discussed in the same area. As for TNA/WWE/ROH stuff, maybe it is not a sport, but i think it would look out of place in entertainment. And, when you boil it down, does it really matter if it is Sports.

It's unwieldy because there are too many non-sports in there. Remove these ones and put them in a sub-category in the Rec category. Just my opinion.

Others, like soccer travel and other stuff like that could also be moved.

Greyhound racing on the other hand...
Well, just think of them as little horses!

No, no it's not. Actual wrestling is, pro-wrestling is more entertainment.

Well it's not a sport so maybe it should be moved to a sub forum of entertainment?

Oh it's not perfect but part of the problem is individual definitions of what is and isn't a sport, this is often subjective. For 99% of people bowling is a recreational past time but for the 1% that compete, it's most definitely a sport and there's plenty of skill and technique required to become good. In the US bowling is a big sport, frequently televised and with big paypackets and 6 figure sponsorship deals for big names in the sport.

However, I just took the existing Sports category fora and rearranged them as seen above. I don't think it's our job to say what should and shouldn't be there, just how to recategorise what is there.
Just my 2c...but I do agree with some points and wouldn't object to bowling being moved if that's what was decided.

No need to change it CuLT.

    Subbed list ftw :)

What about a "Games" SubCat for things like Darts and Bowling?

  • Subscribers Posts: 9,716 ✭✭✭CuLT

We don't want to go down the road of one upmanship on what different people consider sports.
    Wikipedia wrote:
The term "sport" is sometimes extended to encompass all competitive activities, regardless of the level of physical activity. Both games of skill and motor sport exhibit many of the characteristics of physical sports, such as skill, sportsmanship, and at the highest levels, even professional sponsorship associated with physical sports. Air sports, billiards, bridge, chess, motorcycle racing, and powerboating are all recognized as sports by the International Olympic Committee with their world governing bodies represented in the Association of the IOC Recognised International Sports Federations.

For what it's worth, bowling is recognized by the Internation Olympic Committee as a "sport".

r3nu4l: that's some stellar work right there, will put this to the lads.

Winter sports would be taxonomically worthy of it's own category if it had the traffic, so we can leave that on the upper category level as it might expand as global weather deteriorates and Ireland becomes embroiled in the beginning of an ice age.

Greyhound Racing and Horse Racing might be better off under Rec.

I think the Pro Wrestling forum is used as both a WWE thing and a place for Irish wrestlers to discuss, and I guess it's an "Indoor" sport, so might fit comfortable there.

Motorsport - could this be a subforum of Motors? Just putting it out there, I don't know much about cars or their associated sports :(

Racket Sports can probably sit at category level too (taxonomically)

Think Equestrian got left out of the list there...

  • Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 21,504 Mod ✭✭✭✭Agent Smith

Of What Little is Said on the greyhound Forum, A good bit is about the social Aspect.

Perhaps the move to rec might help it!

Just on that, I'd personally have no real interest in cars but would be quite into Formula 1. I'd say there are others the same. I'd certainly consider it worthy of a place in the sports section.
