Hi everyone. Considering building a gaming machine and also use it for graphic design and such.

Here's what I came up with. Just a bit under €2K. Is it a bit over the top?
Anything in there I could sub out and still get value for money?
    Any comments welcomed :)

    Antec Nine Hundred black miditower,
    Corsair Powersupply 620W Black, ATX/EPS,
XFX nForce 780i SLI, XFX nForce-780i SLI,
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 2.67GHz
    OCZ nVIDIA SLI DDR2 PC6400 4096MB KIT,
    Gainward GeForce 8800GTS 512MB GDDR3,
    Gainward GeForce 8800GTS 512MB GDDR3,
    Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA2
    NEC DVD±RW burner AD-7200A, IDE,
    Creative SB X-FI Xtreme Gamer
    PC with no operating system
    LG 22" LCD L226WTQ-SF, 1680x1050,
    Logitech X-240 2.1-Speakerset,
    Linksys Wireless-G PCI 54 Mbps 802.11g

probably shouldn't as I want his case  but Anti is selling his rig on adverts, which matchs a lot of the spec in your build but is also a lot better in a lot of areas

That’s a decent build but you could actually save in a few areas. I am building something very similar.

A few things I would change though are the SLI MoBo and the HDD. Do you really need the Sound Card, use the one on the MoBo you get. You aren't going to see a massive difference in sound quality unless you are listening to music/game/movies on some very expensive bose/sony headphones/speakers. The money you save on a sound card can go towards something else.

I have been told that while the 780i MoBo are great but they are a little expensive and not really worth it compared to the 650i seires.
    Try this: http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=9048&agid=659
No need for a sound card when you have onboard 7.1 channel surround.

As for the hard drive, this is one of the best on the market for speed, reliability and cost. It’s also a terabyte, you can never have to much space. :)

    Just my two cents!

Thank you both for the good feedback.
L31mr0d: I had a look there, monstrous machine. Bit too much for me alas.

OmegaRed: Yeah was thinking that about the soundcar, schoolboy error and cheers for the heads up on the mobo :D

    *waits impatiently for pay day*

I wouldn't even say schoolboy error, I made the same mistake. When you think about it though... does anyone really need a sound card if they already have one on the MoBo? Unless of course you need it for the reasons I listed above!

Might I recommend Hardwareversand.de if you haven't been there already! The prices are pretty good!

yeah rebuild that machine on Hardwareversand.de, you'll probably be able to shave a few hundred euros off it.

I've bought from HWV a few times and can't fault anything about them, great prices, cheap shipping, fast delivery and excellent customer support and returns policies. Typically German

Any particular reason for the Q6700?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,183 ✭✭✭✭Will

Just because it's a powerful enough processor and quad core...

  • Registered Users Posts: 865 ✭✭✭kazzer

But look at how much more expensive it is compared to a Q6600 for the sake of a few hundred megahertz. Not exactly bang-for-buck.

Might be better going with the Q6600 2.4ghz. its what, .27ghz slower but over €150 cheaper (iirc)

If you overclock the Q6600 will probably come out on top too..

Agree with Omega get a decent 650i mobo, those 780i are a waste of money...

    http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=18310&agid=659

I would go 8800gt sli too instead of 8800gts, better value imo..

Squall, whats your view on the GTS ovre the GT. I am looking at buying two of these http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=20421&agid=554 as they are nicely priced and they rate good on the invidia website.
http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce8.html (scroll down to the spec and performance section to compare)

Good price on the 8800gts, was thinking they were still €210, performance difference between 8800gt sli vs 8800gts sli is so close I dont know if its worth the extra €65..

Cant lose either way really both incredible value, what monitor are you using?

    Nice screen.

Gts's are more of a bargain, but performance is so close between them especially in sli, impossible to decide lol..

    2 x 8800gt will cost you €286 on overclockers, shipping is €26..

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-002-PN&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1008

Best value out of the lot imo..

Are you building a new system or just getting graphics?

That will be my next question when I have the system bough and built, how to do bench testing and some basic over clocking!
