Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Travelling to New York.

I think its high time to try and get a job for the three months I'm away, so I went onto craigslist and sent of a few applications to the usual bars diners etc. By chance i came accross a couple of summercamps looking for assistants and group leaders, so i applied on the respective websites and sent of an email with an attached CV("resume"). I more or less immediatly got a response from one of the summer camps offering me the job..

Just wondering has anyone on here worked as a Summer Camp "Counsellor" in America?

Any info about pay etc. is very welcome...

Is it worth holding off accepting the job, incase something better comes up, or would that be a bit to much of a gamble.

    .Dave

I would say accept the job and then if a better offer comes along ditch it. What can they say to you really?
I wouldnt do it at home but they will have alot of counsellors at the camp.

Is it Fat-camp? Because if it is then you will just be a soul crusher. I know an American friend who went to one and came back skinny but depressed!!!!

I doubt the pay is great but it is probably live in with food so you should be fine!!!

Also, think of the female counsellors there!!! Most will be the same age as you!!!

from what i hear the pay isnt great but considering they offered you the job already why dont you ask for details; pay, hours, perks ect?

Hmmm are you allowed work with kids on a J1 visa ??
I thought that was one of the only things it explicitly says you can't do

Babysitting/creche type jobs are definitely out but I'm not sure where the line is drawn, its something you'd want to check out though OP. Actually i've just come across this on the usit website:
There are some areas of work which are not covered by the J1 Visa and these include:
    • Au Pair, Mother's Helper, Child Carer, Nanny, Babysitter, Maid or other jobs of a domestic nature in private homes.
    • Child Care of any kind.
    • Medical Services (medical interns or anything involving hands-on therapy, counselling, administering treatment or making diagnoses of medical, psychiatric or psychological patients).
    • Veterinary Science (making medical diagnoses or administering treatment to animals).
    • Teaching as: Language teacher or Teaching assistant or a full-fledged trained teacher
    • Coaching positions or as a Personal Trainer
    • Beauty Therapy jobs, including massage, hairdressing, manicurist positions or any jobs involving 'hands-on' therapy of any kind.
    • Camp Counsellor.
    • Crew member on ship on aeroplane or as pilots.
    • Certain Casino Positions.
    • Pyramid-selling.
    • Employment with a Staffing agency.
    • Commission only positions.
    • Adult Industry positions.
    • Positions involving any start up fee to the participant or with a travelling concession business.
You need to keep looking! :(
