I wonder if its time now to call this thread Fingal instead of North County Dublin or Dublin County, North. I don't just mean because of the saving of letters.

North County Dublin doesn't actually exist as an address. An Post's OCR reader that sorts mail only reads "County Dublin", rejected the word north.

The Local Govt Act 1993 sets up a new county as well as a new council to govern it.

A startling groundswell of Corporate names are using Fingal instead if NCD. A new league of Ireland team bears the name of Fingal.

There's history to it, in fact County Dublin is an Elizabethan "shire" construct whereas Fynnegall or Dyflinarski existed since the eight century.

Go on then, tell me why they'll have to prise NCD from your Cold DEAD hand.....:pac:

NCD easily describes the area this forum covers, Fingal would also cover the Dublin 15 area.

The forum is grand the way it is. Parts of Fingal inside the M50 encroach into the city as far as Dublin City Council are concerned. They have tried to work with Fingal County Council to get the 1985 city boundary redrawn but FCC won't budge.

In this case it's clear to see that parts of Fingal are classified as Dublin City, therefore your proposal is ludicrous, there would be serious overlapping between the 'Dublin City' and 'Fingal' forums. Its clear and exact the moment.

Do what you what with the thread name.

Fingal County Council to seek extension of boundary into Dublin City

Last night members of Fingal County Council voted unanimously to seek an extension of the county boundary into sections of Dublin City including Chapelizod, Navan Road, Ashtown and the Phoenix Park. Although there have been several examples of city councils such as Waterford and Limerick seeking an extension of the city limits this is the first time that a county council has requested a boundary extension.

The controversy first arose last autumn when Dublin City Council voted to petition the Minister for the Environment to extend the city boundary northwards to the M50, thus bringing sections of Fingal into the city council area including parts of Howth, Santry Woods, Castleknock, Balgriffin and Meakstown. These areas include a large number of industrial and commercial sites, including the Ikea site, and would result in a substantial transfer of income from Fingal to the City Council if approved by the Minister.

Last night's motion was proposed by Fine Gael Councillor and General Election candidate in Dublin West, Dr Leo Varadkar. The motion was adopted unanimously with cross party support from Fine Gael, Labour, Fianna Fail, Progressive Democrat, Greens, Socialist and Independent Councillors.

"I take personal offence to the City Council's attempt to start a boundary war in Dublin. If successful, their proposal would lead to the partition of my home town of Castleknock and would lay down an artificial political boundary between Blanchardstown and Castleknock which are both separated from the rest of the city by carefully protected green belts. It would also bring important green areas and heritage zones such as Howth and Santry Woods into the city and they would no doubt be rezoned for ugly over-development", said Cllr Varadkar.

'The motion adopted by Fingal County Council sends a clear message to the County Council and the Minister to say that we will not take this lying down. If the City Council wants to change one part of the boundary then the totality of the boundary should be reviewed. I firmly believe that the Phoenix Park should be added to Fingal. Fingal has one of the best environmental records in the state and we are better equipped to protect and improve the park that the City Council is. Similarly, the low-density housing areas of Chapelizod, Navan Road and Ashtown are essentially suburban in nature and have more in common with places like Castleknock, Malahide and Lucan than they do with the inner city. They would benefit greatly from restoring their County Dublin status".

'North County Dublin' is clear and concise; the area north of and including the Airport, from Portmarnock on the coast.

This forum is not about boundaries or areas specified in GeoDirectory or An Post's OCR system. Also, it is not specifically for the citizens of Fingal. It is a community forum for people who live in the area that would be generally described as North County Dublin. These same people largely not giving a toss about the Local Govt Act 1993 or the Elizabethan shire system, but being more interested in local planning matters, crime prevention, facilities in their area (e.g, good fish & chips, pubs & clubs, where to hire a hedge trimmer, etc.) & upcoming events, or whatever.
