Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

've copied everything from the stickies onto the Wiki. I propose that the contents of this post be stickied under the title "Charter/FAQ/Images/Events/Routes - Read me first" or something along these lines, and all other current stickies, unstickied ! (This is just my proposal, obviously it's whatever the majority want)

    My reasoning is:
    * Too many stickies at the top is off-putting, reduces space on the first page for posts
    * Large threads like the bike gallery become unwieldy. Having individual threads, for bikes for example, with all the images in one location makes it easier for a new reader to quickly access all the information.
    * Lots of topics come up regularly and have been well answered. Putting these into a FAQ reduces repetition on the board, especially seeing as the board is becoming more active every day. Linking from the FAQ to relevant threads with the answers also allows information to be concentrated in the one place. (Having the info distilled into the FAQ prevents the unwieldy problem above.)
    * Having FAQs in the one place as well should reduce mis-information.

    Charter
The Cycling Forum charter is available at http://wiki.boards.ie/wiki/Board:Cycling#Charter
You must read this before posting on the forum.

    Parts Trade
For parts exchange have a look at http://wiki.boards.ie/wiki/Parts_Trade
    This is for exchange only.

    Bicycle Gallery
The bike gallery is up at http://wiki.boards.ie/wiki/Bike_Gallery
For new bicycles, add the bike image to the gallery, then post a new thread about your bicycle using the image from the wiki in it. People can discuss the bike on the thread, and then it falls off the page over time. Perhaps include a link on the Bike Gallery to the post you discuss the bike.

    Frequently Asked Questions
Rather than a single monster page with all the questions, it has been broken up into individual pages. They are contained in the Cycling category and can be seen at
    http://wiki.boards.ie/wiki/Category:Cycling

    Events
    http://wiki.boards.ie/wiki/Events-Cycling

    Cycling Routes
    http://wiki.boards.ie/wiki/Routes

    Editing the Wiki
The Wiki is publicly editable by anyone that signs up. Cycling forum members are encouraged to modify and add to it as they see fit. If you spot incorrect information, fix it ! If you think it's missing some useful information, then add it !

    Good suggestion.

Spooky, I was just thinking about doing the same thing.

Great Idea... personally, I think there's too many stickys up at the moment anyway -have to scroll down to see if there's any new activity!

Maybe one sticky, with a link to the wiki would suffice?

Yeah that'd be my thinking as well. Too many stickys is offputting. All the links can be moved to the wiki. Could move the bicycle pictures too perhaps. Be nice to have a standard size for em too, no giant pictures. Charter could be moved too. The trade stuff could be handy too, people can remove old stuff from the page, thus reducing the amount of page to wade through to find stuff.

Trade stuff ++, that was a good idea but doesn't really work in thread form.

    Links giving a Database error.

    Anyone else getting it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭Gavin

Yeah, the Wiki seems a bit flakey at the moment. I posted on the Helpdesk forum about it, hopefully they'll sort it out.

Cult said he'd take a look at it tonight. He needs to take boards.ie down completely to examine it..

There is a "reply" button you can make use of in your own threads which causes them to "bump", rather than posting multiple threads about the same problem.

    wtf?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭Gavin

I posted two threads, one yesterday and one today about the wiki being down, rather than use this 'bump' technique.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭Gavin

    *Bump*

Wiki is alive and is being updated

Anyone able to recommend good online stores that deliver to Ireland for cycling gear?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

@Slice- there are some links on the Wiki here. We should probably start a dedicated page. I use mostly (in this order) www.chainreactioncycles.com, www.wiggle.co.uk and www.probikekit.com. All deliver free to Ireland. Well worth comparing prices on www.bikepimp.co.uk before you buy. CRC is generally cheaper than Wiggle but the latter can have good offers, same with PBK. A fair few UK shops will deliver free to Ireland over £50 if you ask them, in my experience.

    excellent

Updated the Bike lights page with more details on batteries, LEDs, using handheld torches.

Nice job. Might also be worth linking to this "sticky":

Can I suggest you add this link to the maintenance section of the Wiki?

    http://bicycletutor.com/

It contains a load of easy-to-follow instructional videos on bike maintenance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭Gavin

You don't need permission to add anything to the wiki, just work away !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,883 ✭✭✭Ghost Rider

    Will do.

    Hi Foks,

Anywhere a newbie can get info on getting into the whole cycling scene / buying a bike? Didn't see anything on the FAQ.

    Cheers.

folks, can I ask that people edit the wiki to link to a few of the threads that have comprehensively debated the common topics. I've edited the charter to ask that the wiki be consulted before posting another rant.

    Ta.

I must be a bit on the thick side because I couldn't work it. I uploaded a pic but couldn't get it to the gallery, computers....pah! I think I'll stick to me bike!

    - Create Account
    - Click upload file on the navigation panel to your left. The important part here is to remember what you call the destination filename, e.g. signalrabbit01.jpg
    - Go to the main gallery page. At the top there is a link to "edit this page". You will be greeted by something like the following:

    92478.png

    - Insert your own image in a similar format (image:source file|your description to appear under image), e.g. Image:signalrabbit01.jpg|Signal Rabbit's Bike.

    - Save page!

I cannot see any photos of the bikes in the wiki gallery. Tried viewing under IE6, FF & Konquerer. Is this because of the attack?

I know it's been said before but it's over six months now and the bicycle gallery isn't working. What gives?
