    Hello everyone

I love a good read, and know lots of big words.

I want to use them better in conversation.

Any tips for expanding one's conversational abilities?

Let's start a robust and stimulating debate assistance in reviving the
lost art of conversation, before it's too late!

    Over to you...

In fairness if your using big words just for the sake of it people are going to think your an arse.

If you want a challenge try to say complicated things in a simple way.

    Agreed.
BUT it works conversely too. I myself often try to say seemingly insignificant things in an archaic or ''complicated'' manner, and I think it's great fun! Which, I suppose, speaks volumes for my character/social life!

I don't mean that I am a windbag who uses big words
    to make myself look clever.

I like to write well constructed sentences and phrases.

Language is so powerful and useful, I guess I just feel that there is
not enough conversation on the subjet of improving our expressions and utterances.

So we're talking big words used in a persons writing and conversation.

Well I guess this can only be achieved by getting people to read more.

    A tall order.

If you have the vocabulary already what's the problem? As long as you're pronouncing the words correctly ;) you should be able to use the most appropriate word for whatever situation you're in - having the vocabulary is the main problem. Unless it's all totally specialised stuff you've been picking up, you should be able to adapt your vocabulary to whatever conversation you're having, regardless of the subject matter.

A little less use of the return key would be a good start ;)

tips for improving conversation... practice :pac:

If you're looking for practice at lying and gross misstatement of fact disguised as fine linguistic ability, debating societies might be a good place to learn. If you wanted a one sided conversation, you could try public speaking.

You could find some girl/guy far too good looking or you and attempt to charm them senseless... although this overlaps the debating societies as regards lying and misstatement of fact.
