lovely build 123, but do you really think 8gb of ram is needed?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 281 ✭✭123

Not Really tbh, but the more ram the better especially if you overclock the cpu to around 3.5GHz then you'll have a pc that'll be good for atleast 2-3 years.
Come to think of it if i had 1200 to spend thats one sweet pc.

very true, but how about drop it to 4gb and get a better mobo?

not that i dont love the 680i i have one myself.

Whats wrong with a 680i? I'd take an extra 4GB over a better motherboard (Especially since the xfx 680i is a good motherboard).

8gb of ram is utter nonsense to be honest, money can be better put in other components. Even 4gb isn't entirely necessary for most games, save for using high res texture mods and the like....they'll get by fine on 2gb. Not that 4gb isn't a sound and worthwhile investment; just that going beyond 4gb is just a waste.

Ditch the 8800GTX, get a cheap 9800gtx, much cheaper and performs close enough. Or, for the same price, get 2x9600GT....beats every card bar the king 9800GX2 in a lot of cases.

If it's solely a gaming machine, an E8x00 CPU will be better at the moment for that purpose, though if you're a multi-tasker the quad is a good choice and that aside the difference would probably be beyond your perception.

As for the 680i...never owned one but an awful lot of complaints about it, including from users here. So wait out on others to comment on that aspect of it.

Yep..stay away from the 680i/780i/790i boards.
My one below sucks but the EVGA 680i is supposed to be good.
I'm switching back to Intel for the next one as I couldn't be arsed with SLI anymore and I've decided I want stability over performance. Go for the X38/X48 boards.
Of course if you want SLI then you have to get a nvidia chipset.
I'd also up the processor to the latest intel quad 9300 I think it is..it's about €230 thereabouts and gives you the 1333fsb..

Nvidia boards are not too hectic on overclocking quad cores and the fsb maxes out at about 350Mhz.
Stay away from the Geil Black Dragon...I think for about a tenner more you can get the kit below. 4GB is loads so far in Vista 64bit and you also need to check that your board supports 8Gb in that memory type. I know mine below doesn't and can only read 6GB with the black dragon. Even with the 8layer pcb they still run fairly hot and you cannot get CL4 timings from then..CL5-3-3-9 at most on the 680i board.

Video card is fine but you could also go with the 8800GT/or 9800GTX. With a 22" monitor any of these cards would be fine.

Hard drive have only 8mb of cache..go for the one below or the Seagate Barracuda version.

If ur going to run Vista then forget all about soundcards..X-fi's aren't worth a bollix since and EAX is nonexistent..alchemy sucks by the way.
Most boards now have great onboard sound that's not far off an X-FI and you can even hook your 7.1 kit to it.

For the PSU I'd recommend the Corsair 620w or 750w. Both great psu and nice and quiet as well. The Seasonic is known for running hot.
The 620watt will more than supply quad-core and SLI. I was running 8800GTX SLI and QX6700 with mine. No probs :D

That is an epic build 123 :)

    Now to find 1,200 euro....

    123's build is nice, but..

    I'd go for a core2duo 8500 or a quad core QX9450 chip over the 6600
Have 4 gig instead of 8
Go for a better non SLI board
buy one 9800x2 instead of 2 9800GTX's, almost the same performance, less trouble, less power consumption
Comes out about the same price, maybe cheaper

Weird thing is im trying to build a 4gb Quad core system with an 8 series gpu and sli mobo for under 300 euro (Money is tight :p)

In any case don't go for a q9300 heard they arent as good for OCing as the q6600

Definately go for the E8500 ..........i've mine running 24/7 @ 4.2GHZ on air cooling ( I recommend a Tuniq Tower). 4GB of memory is plenty..just go for 2x2GB sticks as some 680i boards dislike having all the ram slots populated.
If you are going for an sli'd setup of 8800/9800 series cards i'd highly recommend going for a 24" 1920x1200 res monitor.

sli is pointless, and its for really pointless on anything smaller than a 24" monitor.

Not impressed by your 2 8800gt's?

nope. they suck :p ive only got a 22" monitor so its not worth it.
    but im saving for a 28" :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,924 ✭✭✭Nforce

    24" is plenty......if you've got enough of them!:D

That said....i'm looking at getting a Dell 30"

    P.S. I wouldn't say that sli is pointless.........sure it's a waste at lower resolutions, but at 1920x1200 + it shows some real benefits. However....tri-sli....now that's pointless :p:)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,435 ✭✭✭TiGeR KiNgS

    Well about sli being pointless?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knKWVG6blIA
    2 cards = twice performance :D
However I wouldn't put it was nvidia to pull a fast one on that
seems to add up all a bit to nice if you ask me ;)(Some1 say Conspiracy)
