Yeah, GIMP is pretty good. You can get great deals on some of the older photoshops on ebay at the moment. They're my favourites to be honest.

Adobe's main website gives a months free-trial too, so you should check that out maybe further down the line if you're looking for an upgrade.
The main advantage with Photoshop, is the sheer amount of information on the products - magazines, youtube videos, blog articles, etc.
