I stand corrected here but as far as I know with SIMI registered dealers they can legally have three attempts at fixing a problem before they are forced to give a refund should the customer request. Having said that I'm not sure that Jap Cars Dublin are an approved or registered SIMI dealer.

I was on a course virtually across the road from them during this past week and the amount of engine revving and tyre screeching was some what disturbing!

    Had it an NCT?
From what you say it was running fine for a week and then broke down.

I'd ask the garage to list on paper what has been tested and what has been replaced and when the car will be returned working as normal.
Then if the response is unsatisfactory, contact a solicitor.

well as far as i'm concerned this is the story.

they sold you a car that they said was in "running order"

    - it's not.

So the product is not of merchantable quality and was not as described.

Therefore you are entitled to a full refund under the sale of goods and supply of services act

Should they not comply to this you can take action.

The big issue here is your friend ****ed up cos he changed his mind. as soon as this problem started then he should have said he wanted a refund.

he should get his ass in the garage now and stop fannying about in the car they gave him for a week.

    how much was the car??
