In the interests of a non police topic that should still pull in some opinions I figured I would give this a go. Obviously its completely open to personal opinions not based on work related reasons. Personally I cant decide on just one so heres a shortlist. I also hope that this doesnt turn nasty and try not too take it too seriously or personally.

Ronanstown: Its a large area with seriously bad criminals living there and from what I have seen an absolutely terrible drug problem. Its also not pleaseing to the eyes and for the most part is dominated by career criminal families. Even the Garda station needed 24 hour protection when it was being built and was listed as a library. Also the only station to have full fencing around its grounds.

Moyross: Its actually not the worst area if you consder the percentage of criminals to decent people in it but the actual landscape and designing is horrible. The entire place is an eye sore and without any doubt, contains the two largest and worst criminal families at present.

Sheriff Street: This gets put in purely because I have never seen such a concentration of criminals in my life. The areas around it have a fair amount of honest decent people but this street doesnt and I can honestly say I have never met a person from it thats not a criminal. Its really a shame because the houses and area is quite nice with a great park and playground.

So I believe, a guy I know was starting one of his station placements there think it was phase 2 or 3 not 100% but his very first day, the station was rammed and the car set alight.

Talk about a baptism of fire, the nog knows the lad I'm on about

As far as I know he's still there

Oh come on, I know being a guard might give you a jaundiced view of the area's in which you work but surely it shouldn't remove you entirely from the people from those area's?.

Sheriff St. has as many good, honest & decent people has it has criminals. I should know, I've lived there & married into a family of decent, hard working & honest people. Some of us have been very successful in our careers', I for one have over 23 yrs service in the Defence Forces.

(You and I haven't 'met', but we've probably worked together more than once. ie - cash escorts - EOD callouts etc).

Sheriff St. has some famous past residents - namely JIM SHERIDAN (movie director) & STEPHEN GATELY - there's probably more which at the moment I can't think of.

There's also a great group of locals helping run various community groups too - North Wall Peace Corp (at the North Wall womens centre). North Wall Community Training Workshop At St.Laurences Place to name but a few.

One of the highest ranking Non-Commissioned Officers in the Defence Forces is from Sheriff St also - his family are still living on contributing in a positive way to the area.

I'm sorry I couldn't let a broad statement like that go unanswered.

But back on topic - Sheriff St is a horrible kip ;) with some lovely people living in it.

I gave an honest opinion, Sheriff Street itself is very small. Im not including Canon Lilis, Oriel Street, etc etc.

Obviously the area as a whole has decent people but never once have I dealt with anyone from Sheriff Street that I wasnt investigating. Sorry but thats just my experience (Theres also a few Gardai from there ;))

But lets be honest Karl, how often do we deal with people that we're not investigating? Sadly I don't get much time for socialising whilst on duty :p

The other major group we deal with of course are the vics of crime; and inner city slaggy areas suffer as much with crime, if not more so, than affluent areas.

But thats part of my point. Never dealt with any as a victim or a witness and you have to remember that there is a permanent beat there of 2 Gardai and not one has ever even said hello. Whereas other areas within the community will say hello and chat.

considering victims and witnesses less than half the people you deal with your investigating and thats not including people just stopping to chat or reporting lost property, traffic collisions, etc

I know your giving an honest opinion, and I respect that.

Its just sh*t that your job gives you that view.

Like my own job, having served in the Middle East a few times - I detest Palestinians and just about all Arabs but if I posted that I'd expect someone to come back with a response in a hope of balancing out the argument like I have.

And honestly, I don't envy you your job - I really don't. Its not a job I'd be cut out for.

So anyway, bad parts of the country.

Athlone .. I served some time in this town, and jeeze some parts of it would make Finglas South look like a Florida retirement home!.

Finglas South .. I dispair at this place SCUMBAGS

Sorry but I don't see the point of this belittling of areas on a public forum?

Its not so much belittling as officers expressing their personal opinion on areas they have worked or have experienced in their service. Last time I checked officers were still entitled to have a personal opinion.....though even this has been vetted by department of professional standards (aka rat squad) where I work, AGS members watch out as you're bound to follow suit, hence my signature below....

Yes but has OP served in all these areas? It's just I live right outside Limerick City..quite close to Moyross.I have good decent friends in that area and I also have talked to several Gardai serving that area.Yes there are horror stories and yes there are crime blackspots, but to list them on a public forum for all to see does not do justice to anyone, particularly anyone living in those areas

No I havent, I have worked in 2 and grew up near number 3.

If you read my post you will see I have stated that the area has a lot of decent people but 2 very bad criminal families. Is this not a true statement? Are the shootings, killings and newspaper articles all tall tales? Guess the ERU are there for a holiday then.

You know what, Met or PSNI, delete this thread please, people are to bloody defensive and PC

It's not to often we can hear opinions about places based on something solid rather than just prejudices based on gossip and tabloids. Obviously when Karlito says that sheriff street is rough, it's based on his experience, and if you don't agree with him you can post why not, just like Mairt did. I find it quite informative.

I say keep it coming lads.

Well from my viewpoint I work for the Addiction Services in Tallaght and we have to request support from you guys on a regular basis, so I'm finding this a useful and informative discussion.

Like anything else most my opinion will be a generalisation based on the contact I have with people. This contact for me is in the main part with addicts on methadone programmes who don't want to change there lifestyle. However, that is not to say that there are not alot of very respectful people living there. However, listening to what I hear from clients on a daily basis make me more security conscious when I'm out and about there. I also worked in the north inner city for a few years and hold the same viewpoint.

My partner lives in tallaght and I really wish she would move. So even with saying that I have met a hugh amount of respectful decent people there, some I would consider friends I wish she would move, so I suppose that covers it in a nut-shell.

I'm happy for this thread to remain open as long as replies are objective and on-topic. It's unfair to call places "kips", but it's fair to state personal experience of working in certain areas.

I'm all for that!Maybe the title of the thread could be changed to something a little more subtle?:)

I'm not being defensive or politically correct.Fair enough if you have personal experience with the areas but was there any need to title the thread ''Wheres the worst area in the country?''..it's just like creating a blacklist of areas.

But I wouldn't see any problem with the thread if title was changed, and if it didn't focus on areas that are always in the papers.i.e.Sherriff St and Moyross

    :)

Envitably unless its kept mature its ends up causiing offence. Yes call me "PC and bloody defensive" when an area like "Finglas South" is refered to with a simple response of "I dispair at this place SCUMBAGS".

Mature Freedom of speech is the foundation on democracy and lets be thankful for having it.

I worked in Drogheda for a while and found some parts fairly rough. I was subject to two attempted attacks as a student. We were ordered to remove our blue eppilates so they couldn't distinguish us from the full time members thus reducing our risks. At the time I didn't have a baton to protect myself but I did have a 3 cell Maglite!!!!

Having said that I absolutely loved working in the town and not just for the action. I met some fantastic people and the centre of town is/was being regenerated and looks good. I would love to work there again but unfortunately is too far from my home.

I've actually been around Sheriff Street a bit due to the Luas works and have never had any direct trouble (except from constructionw workers "Why are you taking pictures?!?!").

I suspect the ordinary decent locals won't say "hello" to the gardaí on duty for fear of hassle from those two families.

Its actually funny seeing the detectives sometimes for reasons I won't go into.
