Hey guys, test drove a 2001 bmw 318ci yesterday, beautiful car, the only thing was theat the acclelerator was very stiff, any possible causes for this and is it likely to be troublesome to rectify?

Sounds like it is the model with the 'fly-by-wire' throttle, basically there are no cables running from the pedal to the throttle, instead there is a variable switch at the pedal.

They can get stiff and as far as I know the only fix is to replace it.

    HTH

Was it only stiff when starting to press on the pedal (ie. the first cm or so) or was it continuously stiff through the whole travel of the pedal? If the former then it could just be a dirty throttle body. Very easy to sort out.

Has the car been sitting up for a while? If so this would also indicate a dirty throttle body (afaik).

there did appear to be a little drum behind the accelerator. It was stiff the whole time, not just when starting to accelerate. Ho much would it cost to replace a fly by wire throttle? think the car may have been sitting a while alright... thanks!

2001 318ci is usually 1.9 engine in Ireland and has cable linkage, so will be bit heavy if you're used to fly by wire, common enough problem that throttle butterfly jams due to build up, but this only causes initial hard pedal, cleaning of butterfly/throttle usually fixes this or a slight adjustment to throttle stop.
Very small job for any mechanic.
