Where can I recycle toys?

After Christmas and birthdays our house is overflowing with toys - we have so many now that we can't play with them or even walk across the room where they are stored. Is there anyplace I can bring them? Would any charity shop like them or is there a playgroup anywhere that could do with some extra bits? Or are there any jumble sales coming up that could do with some donations?

I am reluctant to just put them in a bag and bring them into the shops in town because the day I did that with my books both the Animal Welfare on Parnell St and Oxfam said that they had too much stock. This was before they looked at them and I ended up going to the Park Road recycling centre and leaving them in bags beside the book bin there. This may sound silly but it was very traumatic leaving them like that. It had taken so much out of me to be ready to pass them on.

So basically I would like to make sure that the shop/place I bring them to will accept them.

What exactly do you want to get rid of?
I know a specialised needs school that may take some.

If they're in decent condition (workable and no missing parts) you could contact the Rainbow ward in the Regional Hospital - they have a play area for the childrens ward. I'm sure they'd appreciate them

Thanks for all your replies. I also sent off a few emails to some local charities and so far the only one to reply is the SVP. So they will be getting all my leftover toys. The address of the Society is Ozanam House, Hartstonge Street, Limerick. Tel (061) 317327 in case anyone else has toys to donate.

With regard to hospitals, I have a friend whose brother works in Temple St and they are not allowed to accept toys. If anyone donates toys they raffle them out among the staff.

Too late, I have already dealt with them but are there any other items that might be of any use? I haven't very many books left but I am sure that there are other things around the house that I could part with if encouraged. We are living here a year now and there are still some black bags that haven't been opened let alone put away.

Books can be donated to the Sheltered Housing (OAP's) in Drombanna next to the 4 Elms, They have a common room in the main building we have been donating here for years, Hate to see Books destroyed until they become unreadable and falling apart.
