If renting a car from a car rental place, what is the story with insurance? Say you already have insurance but that car is getting fixed?

Also how much worth of petrol/diesel would they put in it?

    Cheers

From my experience with and working along side a rental company, they do a substitute cover for whatever lenght of time you need it. They ring your insurance company and its done in 5mins. Some insurance companies charge a fee which varies others do it for free. Most companies give you a full tank and want it returned on a full tank, again this could vary from rental company to rental company.

I hire cars a lot since particularly for UK and Europe trips it's cheaper than paying ferry fares for my car. Generally the hire company includes basic insurance in the hire fee with an excess that can be as much as €600, but offers you the option of "collision damage waiver", in which case there is either no or a very low excess. They will usually try to pursuade you to also pay in advance for fuel, telling you that it will save you the need to fill up on return. Trouble with that is they will charge you anything up to €2 per litre for a full tank, even if you only use a quarter of it.

I have not personally come across one who wanted my own insurance policy.

Most of the Irish firms (particularly the smaller ones) do this. Very strange carry on imho.
Anywhere in the UK/Europe/USA the hire company provides the insurance.
