Daring to move from the concept that 'fitness' is just about getting a big chest and some sparrows legs while narcissistically faffing and strutting around in an indoor gym, how about - "Fitness Board - Learn To Meet Your Lifestyle's Needs".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

    Important point there ^

Not everyone lifts, and the runners, cyclists etc. have been run off this forum by now (and I know this is why one runner doesn't post anymore) due to the advice almost always being "lift, get strong etc."

So why not something that's a wee bit more inclusive? To be honest I was going to start a topic about the concept of Fitness in relation to the advice that's generally given out here, but then I thought, will it really change people's minds?

Fair enough but Tingle's motto is a bit too PC and not really catchy.

What about this one. It's inclusive and not offensive. It doesn't push the meathead image and it's catchy enough.

I dunno since I ripped the image off t'internet :D (He does have very definite love handles though)

    http://www.subtleenergysolutions.com/bodies.gif

Maybe someone with the Photoshop skills could do up a version of this. There's also no really muscular body in that pic so that needs fixing but I think the general idea is good and lends itself well to a horizontal banner.

Roper makes an excellent point and Javaboy pretty much hit the nail on the head. Excellent work that man!!!!

As i said i will do up a few that people can choose to use if they like, the Fitness forum is really about trying to meet the individual needs of the people who post here, so i think it's best that we try and have a few options to suit those needs.

At the end of the day i will be designing them ( or failing to and bringing in MonkeyFudge ) with the idea of showing some diversity in what we can help people acheive here and also that Fitness is, at the end of the day, both a worthwhile and fun pursuit.

runners lift weights too - well competitive or improving ones do anyway

but yes taking the idea of everyone should be going for maximum absolute strength would be far more inclusive

Never seen a marathon runner lift a weight.

I'm sure you didn't need to be pedantic, it's probably just your nature.

To be fair Roper I was thinking about this too. Alot of runners do some form of lifting, personally I would consider my self to be an imporving one [as I will nerver win the races I enter, just get better]and I never lift, I will cross train bag-work SD when I have the time. But the post did come across as real runners lift weights, and I do concider myself a real runner. A lot of programmes recommend some weights it just doesn't do it for me. Even for the MdS I do not plan to life a weight. However, you spot on about be inclusive.

Think I need to clarify. A newbie comes on this forum and asks for advice and 90% of the time it's "go to a gym, deadlift, bench, squat". Don't get me wrong that's fine, but most people I know who are in great shape do not lift as a primary concern. They lift to supplement other training such as football, rugby, martial arts, boxing, and yes, running too (though I've still never seen nor heard of a marathon runner lifting, I'd be interested in a link to those programmes).

I just think there's a one size fits all mentality here sometimes.

To be fair, that's because most newbies come in and say I've joined a gym, what exercises will make me look better & lose fat? There are other areas on boards for talking about boxing, MAs, football etc. so questions about that just don't get asked as much.

Agreed, but they're fan forums as opposed to advice. I was just trying to make a point regarding the type of tags being suggested, which all pointed to atrophy or strength. There are other types of fitness and smashey is correct, I didn't really want to get drawn into a big debate!

    .

Paula Radcliffe lifts and lots and lots of plyos. Not sure of her program but will have a dig for it. Have seen pics of her squat (not on the roadside but in a gym:D) and she has good technique and was lifting what seemed like a decent weight. But generally you are correct.

I lolled at the squat thing. Thanks for that I'll google and see what I find. I'd imagine it's off season.
